OWINGS MILLS, Md. – Senior
Bella Sylvester and freshman
Emma Taff each finished with two-run base hits to lead the McDaniel College softball team to a doubleheader split on the road against Stevenson on Wednesday.
The Green Terror (11-11-1) snapped a four-game losing streak with the win in game two, playing their local rivals on the road for the first time since 2017.
Stevenson 2, McDaniel 0 (Game 1)
The Mustangs (18-6) won a pitcher's duel in game one, scoring the only two runs of the game in the third inning.
McDaniel put two runners on base in the first inning on singles from sophomore
Ashley Shawyer and freshman
Ally McBride, but the Green Terror stranded both to end the inning.
Both teams combined for only one more baserunner until the bottom of the third, when an RBI single gave the Mustangs a 1-0 lead. After a fielder's choice put runners on the corners, another RBI single gave Stevenson an insurance run, pushing the lead to 2-0 after three.
That score remained for the rest of the game, as McDaniel had a chance to mount a comeback in the seventh inning. Senior
Jessica Millard drew a one-out walk and then advanced into scoring position on a wild pitch. Sophomore
Riley Jackson singled to advance Millard to third, but both runners were left stranded on a game-ending groundout.
McBride had two base hits in three at-bats to lead the Green Terror in game one. Shawyer, Sylvester and Jackson each had one base hit in the opener. Sophomore
Libertie Schatzman took the loss in the circle, allowing two earned runs and five hits while striking out one and walking one on 68 pitches.
The Green Terror ended their losing streak with a win in game two of the doubleheader.
McDaniel 4, Stevenson 1 (Game 2)
Both teams engaged in another pitching battle in the second game of the twin bill. The game remained scoreless until the fifth inning, Junior
Taylor Applefeld reached first on a fielding error, and senior
Olivia Dresser reached on a sacrifice bunt that moved Applefeld to third after another error in the field. Taff then scored both runners on a two-run double hit down the left field line, making the score 2-0 McDaniel.
The Mustangs placed runners on the corners in the sixth inning but couldn't score either, paving the way for a two-run inning in the seventh for the Green Terror.
Dresser began the seventh by reaching base on an error and stealing second. McDaniel loaded the bases after Taff drew a walk and Jackson reached first on another error. A fielder's choice but McBride on base but threw Dresser out at home, but Sylvester delivered on the next at-bat with a two-run single that scored Jackson and Taff, giving the Green Terror a 4-0 lead.
The Mustangs scored their only run of game two on an RBI triple to center field, but Stevenson could not complete the comeback, giving McDaniel the win 4-1.
Sylvester and Taff each finished with a base hit and two RBIs. Shawyer, Millard and Applefeld all finished the game with one hit while Millard and Taff each drew a walk.
McBride earned the win, pitching a complete game and striking out a season-high nine batters. She walked three batters while giving up five hits and only one earned run.
The Green Terror return to Westminster on Saturday to face Franklin & Marshall in a Centennial Conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 1 pm from the Softball Park.
