WESTMINSTER, Md. – Sophomore
Ashley Shawyer hit a two-run double to break a scoreless tie in the fifth inning and freshman
Ally McBride pitched a complete game shutout to lead the McDaniel College softball team to a doubleheader split with Franklin & Marshall on Sunday.
The Green Terror (12-12-1, 3-5) secured their second shutout win of the season in game two, their first coming against Farmingdale State on Mar. 17 from The Spring Games in Leesburg, Fla. It was the team's first shutout win against a Centennial Conference opponent since a 1-0 win over Gettysburg on Apr. 12, 2022.
Franklin & Marshall used a three-run sixth inning to win game one of the doubleheader.
Franklin & Marshall 4, McDaniel 1 (Game 1)
The Diplomats (8-17, 3-5) scored first in the opener on a sacrifice fly in the third inning to take a 1-0 lead. That score held until the sixth inning, when Franklin & Marshall added to the lead with a three-run frame. A two-run double followed by another RBI double put three runs on the board for the visitors, who lead 4-0 midway through the sixth.
McDaniel opened the bottom of the sixth with a leadoff double from senior
Bella Sylvester, who then scored on an RBI single from junior
Sariah Guevara.
The Green Terror mounted a late comeback attempt in the seventh, as senior
Olivia Dresser got on base with a leadoff single and advanced to third on back-to-back steals. Freshman
Emma Taff drew a walk to put runners on the corners with no outs, but a popout followed by two straight flyouts ended the contest with the Diplomats taking the opener, 4-1.
Guevara was responsible for McDaniel's lone run in the loss, going 1-for-3 at the dish with an RBI single. McBride, Sylvester and Dresser all had base hits while Taff drew two walks in three plate appearances.
Sophomore
Amy Anderson took the loss, pitching a complete game and striking out five batters while walking two. She gave up four earned runs on nine base hits in defeat.
The Green Terror stormed back with a shutout win in game two to secure the doubleheader split.
McDaniel 4, Franklin & Marshall 0 (Game 2)
Game two began as a pitcher's duel, as both teams left runners on base through the first four innings. The Diplomats opened the game with a leadoff double and a single followed by a stolen base to put two runners in scoring position, but the visitors stranded both to end the top of the first.
Both teams went down in order until the bottom of the second, when the Green Terror hit three straight singles to load the bases with one out. But a strikeout and a flyout ended the inning to keep the game scoreless through two.
The contest stayed scoreless until the fifth inning, when a leadoff single from Taff and a walk from Sylvester placed runners on the corners. Shaywer then blasted a double into right field that scored both runners and broke the tie, giving McDaniel a 2-0 lead.
Taff added to the lead in the sixth with a two-run single to score junior
Taylor Applefeld and sophomore
Caitlin Boden.
Franklin & Marshall loaded the bases in the seventh but McBride pitched out of the jam, inducing a game-ending flyout to right field that gave the Green Terror a shutout win.
Shawyer's two-run double proved to be the difference as she finished game two with two hits in three at-bats. Taff also had a 2-for-3 game with two RBIs while Applefeld collected two hits as well. McBride, Guevara, Boden, Dresser and sophomore
Riley Jackson all had base hits in the victory.
McBride earned her fourth complete game win of the season in her freshman campaign, racking up eight strikeouts while only allowing two walks and five base hits.
The Green Terror return to the Softball Park on Tuesday to face Dickinson in another Centennial Conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 3 pm.
