WESTMINSTER, Md. - Senior
Olivia Dresser smacked a walk-off RBI-single into right field to complete a 5-4 game two win in extra innings for the McDaniel College softball team in a doubleheader split with Dickinson on Tuesday.
The Green Terror (13-13-1, 4-6 CC) secured their second walk-off win of the season in game two, their first being a 6-5 win against Brockport at The Spring Games on March 20.
Dresser was also responsible for the team's last walk-off win in extra innings, hitting a walk-off single in the ninth inning to beat Catholic 10-9 on April 18, 2023.
Dickinson used a two-run fifth inning to beat McDaniel in game one of the doubleheader.
Dickinson 4, McDaniel 2 (Game 1)
The Green Terror scored first in the opener on a first inning RBI double from sophomore
Caitlin Boden, scoring senior
Bella Sylvester to take a 1-0 lead. The Red Devils (14-18, 3-9 CC) responded in the third with an RBI double that tied the game, but McDaniel answered on an RBI single in the bottom half from sophomore
Ashley Shawyer.
A two-run fifth gave Dickinson the lead back. An error allowed the tying run to score and an RBI double plated the go-ahead run for the visitors. The Red Devils added an insurance run on a sacrifice fly to make the score 4-2 in the sixth. The Green Terror could only secure one more base runner over the final two frames as Dickinson won the opener on the road.
Boden went 1-for-3 with an RBI double and a walk to lead the Green Terror in game one. Shawyer had an RBI hit in four at-bats while freshman
Ally McBride, junior
Sariah Guevara and Sylvester all had base hits in the loss.
Sophomore
Amy Anderson took the loss, pitching a complete game and allowing six hits and four runs, only two of which were earned. She struck out one batter and walked another.
Dresser's walk-off hit capped off a wild win in game two for the Green Terror.
McDaniel 5, Dickinson 4 (Game 2)
The Red Devils took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI single into center field. After the Green Terror went down in order in the first and second innings, Dickinson added to the lead on an RBI triple that made the score 2-0 midway through three.
McDaniel rallied to tie the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the third, despite being held without a hit at that point in the game. Dresser was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning, then advanced into scoring position on a steal of second.
Freshman
Emma Taff drew a walk and Dresser stole third to place runners on the corners with no outs. Sophomore
Riley Jackson reached on a fielder's choice, advancing Taff to second and loading the bases. McBride then reached base on a throwing error, scoring both Taff and Dresser to square the game at 2-2.
A walk from Shawyer loaded the bases again before a ground out ended the inning, with McDaniel tying the game without getting a base hit.
The Green Terror broke the tie in the bottom of the sixth, scoring the go-ahead run on a pinch-hit RBI single from sophomore
Keonna Gonzalez to score freshman
Rileigh Kitchin.
Now trailing 3-2 in the top of the seventh, Dickinson again tied the game on an RBI ground out to knot the score 3-3. McDaniel had a chance to win in the bottom half of the inning, as Jackson drew a lead-off walk and eventually reached third base on a wild pitch. But Jackson was stranded on a pop out in foul territory to send the game into extras.
The Red Devils opened the eighth inning by taking the lead back 4-3 on a sacrifice fly, scoring the runner placed on second to start the extra frame.
Shaywer singled through the left side to start the bottom of the eighth, and Gonzalez tied the game at 4-4 after reaching on a fielder's choice to score Guevara. Dresser then hit the walk-off single into right field to score Shawyer and give McDaniel its second walk-off win of the season.
Dresser finished the game 1-for-2, scoring a run and reaching base three times after getting hit by a pitch twice. McBride went 1-for-4 with two RBIs while Gonzalez had two RBIs and a base hit as a pinch hitter. Shawyer had a two hit game while Sylvester also had a base hit in the win.
McBride pitched all eight innings in the circle, striking out seven batters and walking five while allowing seven hits and four runs on 147 pitches.
The Green Terror hit the road tomorrow to face Hood in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 3 p.m. in Frederick.
