Rogers Pitches Complete Game in Doubleheader Split with Hood

FREDERICK, Md. – Junior Morgan Rogers pitched a complete game in the circle and finished 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the McDaniel College softball team to a 4-1 win in game two of a road doubleheader with Hood on Wednesday.

Rogers pitched her first complete game of the season for the Green Terror (14-14-1) and got her first two hits of the season.

McDaniel took an early lead in game one but fell after Hood scored three runs in the third inning.

Hood 5, McDaniel 3 (Game 1)

Freshman Ally McBride opened the scoring in game one with an RBI single in the second, scoring freshman Kaylah Morosko. The Green Terror left the bases loaded after an inning-ending groundout to lead 1-0.

The Blazers (16-14) responded in the bottom half of the second with an RBI double that scored the game-tying run. Hood then added three more runs in the third to take the lead. An RBI single broke the 1-1- tie, and a two-run single gave the Blazers a 4-1 lead after three.

Morosko led off the fourth with her first career home run, cutting the Hood lead in half on the solo shot. But the Blazers answered with a solo homer of their own in the bottom of the fourth, maintaining their three-run lead through four innings.

Sophomore Riley Jackson hit an RBI single up the middle to score Morosko to cut the Hood lead down to two in the sixth. Freshman Cameron Kelly reached base with a single in the seventh, but McDaniel couldn't mount a comeback, falling 5-3 in game one.

Morosko had a perfect day at the dish, finishing game one 3-for-3 with a home run and three runs scored. McBride went 1-for-4 with an RBI while Jackson also had an RBI hit. Sophomore Keonna Gonzalez, senior Hannah Costa and Kelly all had base hits in the loss.

Costa fell to 2-5 with the loss in the circle, striking out four batters and walking five while allowing 10 hits and five earned runs.

McDaniel 4, Hood 1 (Game 2)

Hood scored first in game two on a sacrifice fly in the second inning. McDaniel responded with a three-run third to take the lead.

Rogers led off the inning with a single, advancing to second on another single from senior Bella Sylvester. McBride loaded the bases after a third straight single, and Gonzalez tied the game on a groundout to score Rogers. Kelly then grounded out to score Sylvester, giving McDaniel a 2-1 lead midway through three.

Rogers sent the Blazers down in order to end the fourth, and McDaniel added an insurance run in the fifth on an RBI single from Kelly. Rogers retired each of the next six Blazer batters, ending the game in the seventh on a popup to strand two runners in scoring position.

Gonzalez and Kelly each finished game two with a base hit and two RBIs while Sylvester had a three-hit day in the leadoff spot. McBride and Rogers each had two base hits with Rogers scoring two runs.

Rogers threw 79 pitches in the complete game win, striking out two batters and walking one while only allowing three hits and one earned run.

The Green Terror return to the Softball Park on Saturday for a Centennial Conference doubleheader with Muhlenberg. First pitch is at 1 pm.
