WESTMINSTER, Md. – Seniors
Olivia Dresser,
Jessica Millard,
Hannah Costa and
Bella Sylvester were honored for Senior Day as the McDaniel College softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to Muhlenberg on Saturday from the Softball Park.
All four seniors got the start in game one for the Green Terror (14-16-1, 4-8) as Muhlenberg used a four-run first inning to win the opener.
Muhlenberg 11, McDaniel 0 (Game 1)
The Mules (19-15, 7-5) plated four runs in the first inning, opening the scoring on a bunt. An RBI single from the next batter made the score 2-0, and Muhlenberg added a third run on a sacrifice bunt, scoring the run on a throwing error. A second sacrifice bunt in the opening frame scored the fourth run for the Mules.
A leadoff triple paved the way for two more runs to score in the second for Muhlenberg. An RBI single made the score 5-0, and a steal of third base turned into a sixth run after a throwing error.
The Mules put up another two-spot in the third, increasing the lead to 8-0. The Green Terror placed two runners on base in the bottom of the inning but could not make a dent in the lead.
A two-run homer in the fourth sealed the win for the Mules. Another run in the fifth made the score 11-0 as the vistors claimed victory via run rule.
Sylvester and Millard each had base hits in the loss, while freshman
Ally McBride, sophomore
Ashley Shawyer and juniors
Ryan Smith and
Taylor Applefeld all had base hits.
Costa took the loss in the circle, striking out two batters and walking one while allowing six runs on six hits. Sophomore
Amy Anderson and junior
Morgan Rogers each pitched in relief.
Muhlenberg 2, McDaniel 0 (Game 2)
Game two was a pitcher's duel as both starters went the distance. Muhlenberg loaded the bases in the first inning but left them stranded after Applefeld threw out a runner advancing home on a fielder's choice and McBride collected a strikeout and a popup to end the frame.
An RBI double gave the Mules a 1-0 lead in the second, but Applefeld made another strong defensive play to throw out an advancing runner at the plate after a single.
Muhlenberg added an insurance run on another RBI double in the third to go ahead 2-0. Sylvester smashed a double off the left field wall in the bottom half of the inning but was left stranded after a lineout and a groundout.
A 1-2-3 inning in the seventh gave the Green Terror one last chance to mount a comeback, but only Applefeld reached base on a single as the Mules closed the door and secured the doubleheader sweep.
Smith had a two-hit day in game two, going 2-for-3 at the plate. Sylvester's third inning double was the only extra-base hit of the day for McDaniel as Shawyer and Applefeld also reached base with hits.
McBride pitched a complete game in the loss, tallying six strikeouts and two walks while allowing 13 hits and two earned runs.
The Green Terror travel to Gettysburg on Tuesday to battle the No. 13 Bullets in a road doubleheader. First pitch is set for 3 pm.
