GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Sophomore
Ashley Shawyer finished the day with three hits and two RBIs as the McDaniel College softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader to No. 14 Gettysburg on Tuesday.
Shaywer increased her team-best batting average to .395 after her three-hit day, good enough for ninth among all qualified batters in the Centennial Conference.
The Green Terror (14-18-1, 4-10) took an early lead in the opener before Gettysburg scored nine unanswered to win the game.
Gettysburg 9, McDaniel 1 (Game 1)
Freshman
Ally McBride got on base with a single in the first and scored on an RBI double from Shawyer, allowing McDaniel to take a 1-0 lead at the end of one. The Bullets (33-4, 13-1) tied the game in the second on another RBI double, knotting the contest at 1-1.
A six-run third inning put the Bullets in front. A two-run single broke the tie, and an RBI single made the score 4-1. Two extra-base hits plated three more runs for Gettysburg, as the Bullets ended the frame with a 7-1 lead.
Gettysburg scored twice in the fourth to take a 9-1 lead. The Green Terror couldn't respond in the fifth, falling to the Bullets in the opener.
Shaywer was perfect at the plate in game one, going 2-for-2 with an RBI double. McBride reached base with a single and scored a run in the defeat.
Junior
Morgan Rogers took the loss in the circle, allowing two earned runs and five total on five hits in two innings. Sophomore
Amy Anderson and senior
Hannah Costa each pitched in relief in the loss.
McDaniel opened up a 2-1 lead in game two before five unanswered runs gave Gettysburg the win and the sweep.
Gettysburg 6, McDaniel 2 (Game 2)
After the Bullets scored the game's first run on an RBI double in the first, McDaniel stormed back to take the lead with a two-run third. Shawyer tied the game with another RBI double that scored senior
Bella Sylvester, and freshman
Kaylah Morosko singled into left field, allowing Shawyer to score after a throwing error.
McDaniel maintained the 2-1 lead until the fifth inning, when the Bullets tied the contest on an RBI groundout. An RBI single put Gettysburg in front 3-2 after five.
A three-run sixth inning cemented the win for the home team. A bases-loaded RBI single plated an insurance run for the Bullets, and two more runs scored on another RBIb single to make the score 6-2. The Green Terror put two runners on base in the seventh but stranded both as the Bullets held on to win.
Shaywer wrapped up a three-hit day with a 1-for-4 performance in game two. Junior
Ryan Smith, junior
Taylor Applefeld, Sylvester and Morosko all had base hits in the loss, while McBride reached base twice by drawing two walks.
McBride took the loss in game two, pitching 5.1 innings and allowing six earned runs while walking seven and striking out five.
The Green Terror host Catholic at the Softball Park on Thursday in the team's final home games of the regular season. First pitch is at 3 pm.
