SWARTHMORE, Pa. – The McDaniel College softball team dropped both games of a doubleheader on the road against Centennial Conference rival Swarthmore on Saturday.
The Green Terror (10-10-1, 2-4) were held to one hit in the opener, falling 10-0 in game one of the doubleheader.
Swarthmore 10, McDaniel 0 (Game 1)
The Garnet (19-7, 6-0) scored first after a sacrifice bunt caused a throwing error at second base. Swarthmore tacked on two more runs in the first, scoring on an RBI single and another throwing error.
Swarthmore cemented the win with a seven-run third inning. An RBI single made the score 4-0, followed by RBI doubles to push the lead to seven. The exclamation point came on a three-run homer to put 10 runs on the board for the Garnet.
Sophomore
Ashley Shawyer had the only base hit for McDaniel, going 1-for-2. Senior
Hannah Costa took the loss in the circle, pitching 2.2 innings and allowing nine earned runs on nine hits. Sophomore
Amy Anderson pitched 1.1 innings in relief and walked two batters while allowing two base hits.
Swarthmore 5, McDaniel 0 (Game 2)
The Garnet scored on a passed ball to open the second game of the twin bill. After McDaniel held Swarthmore scoreless for the next three innings, the home team broke through in the fifth and sixth innings, scoring four combined runs.
An RBI double gave the Garnet an insurance run in the fifth, making the score 2-0. Three more runs crossed the plate in the sixth, two of which were scored on RBI singles and the last on a sacrifice fly.
Senior
Bella Sylvester led the Green Terror at the plate in game two, going 2-for-3 with a double. Shawyer, freshman
Ally McBride and junior
Sariah Guevara also recorded base hits in the loss.
McBride went the distance in game two, pitching six innings and allowing five earned runs while walking six and striking out two.
The Green Terror return to the Hill on Tuesday to face Catholic in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is set for 3 pm from the Softball Park.
