Baseball Rallies Past Lancaster Bible for 10-4 Win

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Eight runs scored across the fifth and sixth innings propelled the McDaniel College baseball team to a 10-4 midweek win over Lancaster Bible on Wednesday from Preston Field.

The Green Terror (9-11-1) trailed early in the contest but rallied to take command of the game in the later innings.

Sophomore Shea McKenna reached base on a fielder's choice in the first inning that scored graduate student Joey Hubinger for the game's first run. A two-run double in the second inning gave the Chargers (10-11) the lead 2-1, but Hubinger responded later in the second with an RBI double of his own, scoring freshman Thomas Mezzullo to tie the score, 2-2.

Lancaster Bible took the lead again in the top of the third on an RBI fielder's choice, but McDaniel would take the lead for good with a four-run frame in the fifth inning. Hubinger started the rally with a leadoff walk, scoring the tying run on a wild pitch that advanced junior Ben Davis to second. Freshman Cameron Simon reached base on a fielder's choice and Davis scored after a throwing error from the first baseman, giving the Green Terror the lead 4-3. McKenna then stole home plate to add an insurance run on the board. Sophomore DJ Stolba added an RBI double to the tally that scored Simon.

The Chargers scored once in the sixth but grounded into a double play to end the top half. McDaniel answered with another four-run inning to take control of the contest. Davis smacked a single into left field that fell at the outfielder's feet, allowing Novario to score after Hubinger was picked off in a rundown. Simon walked with the bases loaded later in the inning to add another run, and Stolba ripped a two-run single to left center field to put an even 10 runs on the board for McDaniel.

The Green Terror bullpen did the rest, shutting down the Charger offense by only allowing a single baserunner for the final three innings. Senior Conor Henderson closed the door in the ninth with a 1-2-3 inning that fell one ball short of an immaculate inning.

Stolba led the team with three RBIs on the day, going 2-for-4 with a double in the win. Hubinger and Davis each had three hits, two runs scored and an RBI. McKenna went 1-for-4 with an RBI and a walk while scoring two runs, including a steal of home plate. Simon earned two RBIs despite not getting a base hit while Mezzullo went 1-for-4 with a run scored.

Sophomore Aiden Castile earned his second win of the season, striking out two batters and only allowing one baserunner in two innings of relief work. Junior Tyson Nercessian got the start, finishing the day with two strikeouts and three walks in 2.0 innings. Seven Green Terror pitchers combined for eight strikeouts and six walks in the victory, allowing a total of five hits and four runs.

The Green Terror open Centennial Conference play on Saturday with a home doubleheader against Haverford. First pitch is set for 12 pm from Preston Field.
