Softball Wraps Up Spring Games with Late Rally in Game Two

LEESBURG, Fla. – The McDaniel College softball team wrapped up a nine-game spring break slate with losses to Babson and SUNY Cortland in a doubleheader from The Spring Games in Leesburg, Fla.

The Green Terror (6-6-1) led 4-3 in the fourth inning of game two and scored two runs in the seventh but couldn't finish off the comeback. McDaniel fell 10-2 in the first contest of the day to Babson.

Babson 10, McDaniel 2 (Game 1)

After two scoreless frames, the Beavers (8-3) broke through in the third with a three-run inning. Babson pushed the lead to 5-0 after two more runs in the fourth, but McDaniel responded with an RBI single from junior Ryan Smith in the top of the fifth inning.

The Beavers responded with two RBI groundouts in the fifth to increase the lead. Sophomore Libertie Schatzman added another run for McDaniel on another RBI groundout, but the Green Terror could not mount a comeback late as Babson added three more runs in the sixth to put the game away.

Smith had the lone RBI hit for McDaniel in the loss, going 1-for-3 at the plate. Freshmen Ally McBride and Emma Taff each had a base hit, as did Schatzman. Senior Hannah Costa and junior Taylor Applefeld each got on base with a walk.

Costa took the loss in game one, pitching five innings and allowing seven runs on nine hits. She struck out one batter and walked four. Senior Kattie Hutchinson pitched 0.2 innings in relief of Costa.

SUNY Cortland 9, McDaniel 7 (Game 2)

The Red Dragons (4-5) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning before McDaniel cut into the lead on a stolen base from Smith, who scored after a throwing error from the catcher.

After Cortland added another run on a sacrifice fly in the second, the Green Terror scored three straight runs to take a 4-3 lead in the fourth. Junior Sariah Guevara began the scoring with an RBI single that scored Schatzman. Applefeld then scored Guevara on another RBI single, and Taff responded with another single to score freshman Rileigh Kitchin

A five-run fifth inning turned the tide in Cortland's favor. Now trailing 8-4, the Green Terror tacked on another run with an RBI single from Smith, but another Red Dragon run in the seventh pushed the lead back to four. McDaniel rallied with a two-run single from freshman Kaylah Morosko but a fielder's choice ended the game in the seventh.

The Green Terror tallied 13 base hits, and five batters had two base hits. Smith went 2-for-5 with an RBI while Taff and Guevara each went 2-for-4. Kitchin went 2-for-3 with two runs scored while Applefeld went a perfect 2-for-2 with a walk.

Sophomore Amy Anderson pitched four innings and took the loss, giving up seven earned runs on six base hits. She walked four batters and recorded one strikeout. Schatzman pitched three innings in relief, giving up five hits and two earned runs with two walks and a strikeout.

The Green Terror return to Maryland to face Notre Dame (MD) for a midweek road doubleheader on Mar. 26. First pitch is set for 3 pm from Baltimore.
