Softball Sweeps Doubleheader on Day Two of Spring Games

LEESBURG, Fla. – The McDaniel College softball team swept a doubleheader with Farmingdale State and SUNY Geneseo on Monday to highlight day two of The Spring Games from Leesburg, Fla.

The Green Terror (3-3-1) earned their first shutout victory since Mar. 20, 2024, with an 8-0 win over Farmingdale State in game one.

McDaniel 8, Farmingdale State 0 (Game 1)

Sophomore Riley Jackson started the scoring with a steal of second base in the first inning, allowing junior Ryan Smith to score on the throw. After senior Bella Sylvester reached base with a single, she also stole second and Jackson scored on the throw, giving McDaniel a 2-0 lead after one. 

After four scoreless innings, the Green Terror broke the game open with a six-run frame in the sixth. Smith smacked an RBI double to center field that scored junior Taylor ApplefeldJackson followed with an RBI single to score sophomore Libertie Schatzman, making the score 4-0 McDaniel. Sylvester sent a two-run single down the left field line that scored both Smith and Jackson, and senior Jessica Millard ended the scoring with a two-run double.

Sylvester and Millard led the way at the plate, each going 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Jackson had hits in 2-of-3 at-bats and scored two runs while Smith had a 1-for-3 day with an RBI and two scores. 

Senior Hannah Costa earned her first win of the season in a shutout. She pitched six innings and only allowed four hits for the Rams (1-2). She struck out four batters and walked four on 81 pitches.

McDaniel 11, SUNY Geneseo 6 (Game 2)

The Green Terror overcame an early 4-0 deficit to beat SUNY Geneseo in game two, handing the Knights (4-1) their first loss of the season.

SUNY Geneseo scored four runs across the first two innings to open an early lead. McDaniel responded with a three-run fourth inning highlighted by an RBI single from freshman Cameron Kelly that cut the deficit to one.

Strong baserunning increased the Knights' lead to 5-3 after a steal of home plate. Smith helped the Green Terror close the gap by scoring on a passed ball in the fifth inning, but SUNY Geneseo countered with an RBI single in the sixth.

McDaniel entered the seventh down 6-4, but a seven-run frame completed the comeback and sealed the doubleheader sweep. Sophomore Ashley Shawyer began the rally with an RBI single, again cutting the deficit to one. Kelly then cleared the bases on a three-run double that put the Green Terror in front, 8-6. Freshman Emma Taff earned her first career RBI on a single that scored Kelly, and two more RBI singles completed the seven-run inning. 

Kelly had two hits in four at-bats and led the team with four RBI in the win. Smith went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored while Sylvester also had a two-hit performance. Shawyer, Millard, Taff and sophomore Caitlin Boden each had an RBI on the day.

Kelly was also the winning pitcher for game two, going the distance by pitching all seven innings. She struck out five batters and allowed five walks and four earned runs. 

McDaniel kicks off day three of The Spring Games with a doubleheader against Scranton and Juniata tomorrow. First pitch is set for 9:45 am.
