Softball Undefeated in Spring Games After Another Sweep

LEESBURG, Fla. – The McDaniel College softball team earned its second sweep in as many days after defeating Scranton 4-3 and Juniata 10-6 to remain undefeated at The Spring Games in Leesburg, Fla.

The Green Terror (5-3-1) have won five straight games for the first time since last season, when they won five straight between Apr. 21 and Apr. 24, 2024.

McDaniel opened the doubleheader with a comeback win in game one over the Royals (6-4).

McDaniel 4, Scranton 3 (Game 1)

Scranton started the game with a bases-loaded walk to take an early 1-0 lead in the first. The Royals added two more runs in the third on RBI singles, making the score 3-0.

After a scoreless fourth, the Green Terror stormed back in the fifth. Junior Taylor Applefeld started the rally with an RBI single to center field that scored sophomore Caitlin Boden to put McDaniel on the board. A sacrifice fly from junior Ryan Smith closed the gap to one before freshman Emma Taff singled up the middle to score Applefeld and tie the game, 3-3.

The game remained tied into the seventh when sophomore Riley Jackson reached base with a single. Jackson advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and then scored on an RBI single from Smith to give McDaniel the lead, 4-3. The Royals went down in order in the bottom half of the seventh to end the game and give the Green Terror the comeback victory.

Smith led McDaniel at the dish, going 1-for-3 with two RBI on the day. Taff also had an RBI hit while Boden had two hits in three at-bats. Applefeld went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a run scored in the win.

Senior Hannah Costa earned another complete game win, striking out two Royals and walking four while allowing one earned run and three total on eight hits.

McDaniel 10, Juniata 6 (Game 2)

The Green Terror had to overcome another early deficit to defeat the Eagles (4-8) and complete the doubleheader sweep.

Juniata struck early with four runs in the first inning. McDaniel countered with an RBI fielder's choice in the bottom half to make the score 4-1 after one.

A five-run third inning swung the momentum in favor of the Green Terror. Sophomore Keonna Gonzalez reached first on an error, allowing Boden to score to cut the deficit in half. McDaniel then scored four straight runs on bases-loaded walks to end the third inning with a 6-4 edge.

Four more runs came across the plate to pad the Green Terror lead in the fifth inning. Smith smacked an RBI single into center field to score freshman Cameron Kelly, Applefeld scored from third on a wild pitch, allowing Smith and Boden to each advance a base. Sophomore Ashley Shawyer then cleared the bases with a two-run single to give McDaniel a 10-4 lead after five.

Juniata tacked on two more runs in the sixth but could not complete a comeback of their own as the Green Terror held off the rally to complete the sweep and secure their fifth straight win.

Smith reached base in all five of her plate appearances, going 2-for-2 with two RBIs and drawing three walks. Shawyer and junior Sariah Guevara also had two-hit performances for the Green Terror, and six other McDaniel batters finished game two with an RBI.

Sophomore Amy Anderson got the win in game two, striking out a career-high seven batters and only walking one. She allowed six earned runs and 13 hits on 101 total pitches.
