Softball Starts Spring Break Slate with First Win of Season

LEESBURG, Fla. – Senior Olivia Dresser finished with four RBIs to lead the McDaniel College softball team to its first win of the season, defeating Rutgers-Camden 10-5 to open The Spring Games in Leesburg, Fla.

Head coach Jessica Zavolta earned her first career win for the Green Terror (1-3-1), who recorded their first double-digit scoring effort since a 14-13 loss in game one of a doubleheader with Muhlenberg on Apr. 27, 2024.

Three batters recorded multiple base hits, including junior Ryan Smith, who went 2-for-3 with an RBI, a walk and two runs scored. Sophomore Keonna Gonzalez collected two hits and scored twice while sophomore Caitlin Boden got on base four times, twice with hits and twice on walks.

McDaniel began the scoring in the third inning after Smith scored on a wild pitch. Three runs came across the plate in the fourth, all of which were scored without a base hit. Junior Sariah Guevara walked with the bases loaded to score Gonzalez. Later in the inning, Dresser earned an RBI on a sacrifice fly while Smith grounded out to score junior Taylor Applefeld

After the Scarlet Raptors (0-9) scored in the bottom of the fourth, the Green Terror responded with a four-run inning in the fifth. Freshman Ally McBride singled to left center field to score senior Bella Sylvester, and Dresser hit a three-run triple later to increase the lead to 8-1. Rutgers-Camden scored three runs in the bottom half to cut the lead to 8-4 after five.

A bases-loaded walk from sophomore Libertie Schatzman sent another run in for McDaniel in the seventh inning. Schatzman then advanced to second on a wild pitch to score Smith from third base, making the score 10-4. The Scarlet Raptors tacked on one final run but could not mount a comeback late.

Sophomore Amy Anderson pitched a complete game and earned her first win of the season. Anderson struck out six batters while walking only two, giving up three earned runs and five total in seven innings.

The team's second game of the day against Ramapo was canceled due to weather.

The Green Terror will return to The Spring Games tomorrow with a Monday doubleheader against Farmingdale State and SUNY Geneseo. First pitch is scheduled for 10:45 am from Sleepy Hollow Sports Complex.
