First Half Carries Ohio Wesleyan Past Women's Lacrosse, 16-7

WESTMINSTER, Md. - Ohio Wesleyan scored 11 of their 16 goals in the first half en route to a 16-7 victory over the McDaniel College women's lacrosse team Wednesday evening inside Gill Stadium.

The Green Terror (4-3) lost for just the second time in five home games this season, dropping the first-ever meeting against the Battling Bishops and head coach Paige Messersmith, a 2013 graduate of McDaniel who ranks eighth in program history with 179 points and earned All-America honors in 2013.

Junior Kat Thayer totaled two goals, three points, three ground balls, eight draw controls and five caused turnovers, one shy of the program record.

Thayer now has 85 career points and 93 career draw controls. With seven more draw controls, she will become just the 12th player in program history to total 100.

Junior Charlotte Alexander also had two goals and one assist.

McDaniel scored the game's first goal as junior Addison Utterback scored off an assist from Alexander just 49 seconds into the contest.

However, Ohio Wesleyan (5-2) scored the game's next five to take a 5-1 lead with 4:15 remaining in the first quarter. Alexander scored her first goal with 2:56 left and the Green Terror trailed by three after one, 5-2.

The Battling Bishops answered with the first three goals of the second to stretch their lead to 8-2 before junior Mia McElwee scored her second goal of the season at the 7:03 mark.

The visitors closed the half with back-to-back goals in the final 3:27 and led 11-4 at halftime.

Ohio Wesleyan scored 11 goals on 21 shots in the first 30 minutes and held an 11-6 edge in draw controls. The team also scored on four of five free-position shots and forced 11 turnovers.

The second half was closer with the Battling Bishops scoring five goals on 14 shots compared to three on 11 for the Green Terror. Both teams also won five draw controls each, but Ohio Wesleyan's Abby Markowitz totaled six of her 10 saves in the second half, including four in the fourth quarter to thwart any attempts at a comeback.

Sophomore Emily Conklin had four ground balls and two caused turnovers while junior Caleigh Kohr had a season-high 10 saves and five ground balls.

McDaniel continues its five-game home stand on Sunday, March 16 when it hosts Wisconsin-Eau Claire in the first-ever meeting between the two teams. Opening draw is set for noon.
