COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - The McDaniel College men's wrestling team concluded the regular season with a tri-meet at Ursinus Saturday against the Bears and Merchant Marine inside Helfferich Hall.
The Green Terror (5-14, 3-2 CC) suffered its first two Centennial Conference losses, falling to Merchant Marine 27-18 in the opener before dropping a 33-14 decision to the hosts.
Senior
Xavier Howard and junior
Thomas Monn each posted two wins on the day with Monn recording both by fall.
Against the Mariners (9-5, 3-2 CC), McDaniel jumped out to a 19-9 lead after three consecutive wins beginning with Monn at 149 pounds. Ranked 10th nationally and first in Region 3, he pinned Matthew Trinidad in 3:43 before Howard, ranked fourth in Region 3, edged out a 6-4 decision over seventh-ranked Edward Pinc at 157.
Junior
Andre Allen increased the lead to 10 after posting a 9-1 major decision over Colby Cloutier who is ranked fourth in Region 3.
Led by Reid Garrison, ranked 12th in Division III at 285 pounds, and Tyler Withers, ranked fifth in Region 3 at 184 pounds, Merchant Marine won the final four matches to earn a nine-point victory after McDaniel had a point deducted for unsportsmanlike behavior during the match at 197 pounds.
In a match-up of two regionally-ranked wrestlers at 133 pounds, sixth-ranked Wesley Wydick recorded a first period fall over junior
Romeo Tsai who is ranked seventh.
After dropping its first conference match of the season, the Green Terror took on host and two-time defending champion Ursinus in the final match.
The Bears (10-, 5-0 CC) won the first three matches, including a battle of two regionally-ranked wrestlers at 125, to take a 10-0 lead. At 125, sixth-ranked Franco Mazza edged out a 6-2 decision over senior
Alex DuFour who is ranked fifth.
Back-to-back wins by Monn and Howard gave the visitors a one-point lead, 11-10. Monn picked up a fall in 3:51 over Max Parnis who is ranked fifth in Region 3 at 149 before Howard recorded a tech fall over Wesley Tosto at 157 pounds, 21-6.
However, Ursinus won four of the final five matches to finish the regular season unbeaten in five conference matches this season.
In an exhibition match at 174 pounds, junior
Kenneth Moore earned a tech fall over Jordan Downey, 18-1. It was Moore's sixth win of the season and third by tech fall.
With the regular season complete, McDaniel will head to the 2025 Centennial Conference Wrestling Championships next Saturday, Feb. 15 at Gettysburg. Competition gets underway at 10 a.m.
