WESTMINSTER, Md. - Junior
Avery Cummings picked up his ninth win of the season, including seventh by fall, to lead the McDaniel College men's wrestling team to a 24-15 victory over Gettysburg Thursday night inside the Gill Center.
The Green Terror (5-12, 3-0 CC) posted their third-straight win and remained unbeaten in three Centennial Conference matches this season.
McDaniel won six of the 10 matches, including five of the first seven, capped by a fall from Cummings in just 4:46 at 174 pounds, to take a 21-7 advantage.
The most notable match of the night came at 149 pounds between junior
Thomas Monn and Ethan Composto. Monn is ranked 10th in Division III and entered the match with a 22-2 record and a 14-0 mark in dual matches while Composto ranked 15th and was undefeated at 21-0. Monn is also the top-ranked wrestler in Region 3 while Composto is third.
Monn held a 3-1 lead after the first period before holding Composto scoreless over the final two periods to record an 11-1 major decision.
Immediately following that match, senior
Xavier Howard, ranked fourth in Region 3 at 157 pounds, battled Gavin Pascoe to a 6-6 tie at the end of regulation after securing a three-point take down in the final few seconds. Howard then secured a 6-3 win in sudden victory with another take down in the first minute of extra time.
Holding a 21-12 lead after a tech fall by Gettysburg (3-6, 1-3 CC) at 184 pounds, McDaniel secured the match with a win at 197 pounds when senior
Val Pryor earned a hard-fought 11-6 decision over Phil Nave, the eighth-ranked wrestler in Region 3.
The Green Terror began the night with back-to-back major decision victories by senior
Alex DuFour at 125 pounds and junior
Romeo Tsai at 133 pounds.
McDaniel looks to finish the regular season unbeaten in conference matches as it heads to Ursinus to take on the Bears and Merchant Marine. Action gets underway at noon.
