Alexander Nets Overtime Game-Winner in 15-14 Win at Hood

FREDERICK, Md. - Junior Charlotte Alexander scored just 39 seconds into overtime to lift the McDaniel College women's lacrosse team to a 15-14 road victory over Hood Wednesday night on Thomas Athletic Field.

The Green Terror (2-1) have won all 10 meetings against the Blazers dating back to April 3, 1985. Tonight marked the first meeting between the two teams in Frederick since April 10, 2001.

It was the first overtime game for McDaniel since March 17, 2022 against Amherst in Colorado Springs, Colo. and the first overtime win for McDaniel since April 21, 2018 against Swarthmore, a 19-18 victory at home.

Sophomore Emily Conklin won the draw to start the extra period before junior Kat Thayer found Alexander for her third career game-winning goal and the team's first overtime win since April 21, 2018 against Swarthmore at home, 19-18.

Alexander had two goals in her first game of the season while Thayer totaled six goals, four assists, 10 points, four ground balls, three caused turnovers and seven draw controls. Her 10 points were the most by a Green Terror since Kealey Allison also had 10 versus Washington College on April 6, 2022.

Meanwhile, Conklin finished with three goals, one assist, four points, five ground balls, one caused turnover, and eight draw controls.

The duo of Thayer and Conklin combined for nine goals, five assists, 14 points, nine ground balls, four caused turnovers and 15 draw controls. They were also 4-for-5 on free-position shots.

Led by three goals from Abby Burnette, Hood (1-4) scored seven of the game's first eight goals to take a 7-1 lead with 11:31 remaining in the second quarter.

However, McDaniel responded with five-straight goals to pull within one at halftime, 7-6. Thayer had a hand in three of them with two goals and one assist.

The Blazers came out of the break by scoring the first four goals of the second half to take an 11-6 advantage with 8:03 left in the third quarter and led 13-9 with 13:53 to play in regulation.

Just like the second quarter, Thayer kick started another rally in the fourth, scoring the first of four consecutive goals to tie the game at 13-13 with 8:42 remaining.

Emma Massey would put the Blazers back in front before Conklin tied the game and forced overtime with her third goal and first career hat-trick with 2:48 left.

The Green Terror outscored the hosts 10-3 in the second and fourth quarters, out-shooting them 20-8 and winning nine out of 14 draw controls.

Junior Caleigh Kohr made four saves in goal while Alivia Hosterman had 14 for Hood.

McDaniel begins a six-game home stand on Saturday when it welcomes Susquehanna to Gill Stadium for a non-conference contest beginning at noon.
