First Quarter Carries McDaniel Past Goucher in Season Opener

WESTMINSTER, Md. - Junior Addison Utterback scored all four of her goals in the first quarter to lead the McDaniel College women's lacrosse team to a season-opening 12-7 victory over Goucher Saturday at Gill Stadium.

This marks the fourth-straight season that the Green Terror (1-0) have opened the season with a victory over the Gophers. They have outscored their local rival 61-15 in those contests, including 27-8 at home.

Utterback tied her career-high in goals and points with four while recording her second career hat-trick. She also had four goals in a 14-7 win over Bridgewater (VA) at home on March 7, 2024. She completed her hat-trick with 7:54 remaining in the first quarter as she scored three of McDaniel's first five goals.

Senior Paris Conord also registered her second career hat-trick with three goals and a career-high four points. She had four goals verus Ursinus on March 30, 2024.

The Green Terror scored the game's first six goals and led 7-1 after the first quarter. They outs-hot the visitors 13-2 and forced six turnovers.

Conord and sophomore Emily Conklin each had second-quarter goals as McDaniel took a 9-3 lead into halftime.

Goucher (0-1) outscored the Green Terror 4-1 in the third to pull within three after the second of back-to-back goals by Emily Burk.

However, that would be as close as the visitors would get as McDaniel scored the game's final two goals in the fourth with Conklin netting her second and junior Jordon Gambrill scoring her first. Conklin finished with two goals and two assists, the first points of her career after spending the 2024 season as a defender.

Freshman Sam Moser recorded her first career point with an assist on Utterback's second goal with 11:24 to play in the first quarter. She was one of seven different players to record a point for the Green Terror.

Junior Kat Thayer finished with two goals, one assist, three points, six ground balls, five draw controls and three caused turnovers. As a team, McDaniel totaled 15 caused turnovers with 10 different players recording at least one.

Junior Caleigh Kohr finished with two saves in over 42 minutes of action in her 33rd career game and 29th career start. Junior Emma Wood played the final 18 minutes, record one fourth-quarter save.

The Green Terror begin a two-game road trip next Saturday, Feb. 22 at Randolph-Macon. Opening draw is set for 4 p.m.
