WESTMINSTER, Md. - Led by a quartet of double winners, the McDaniel College men's wrestling team split a tri-match with Shenandoah and No. 19 Messiah inside the Gill Center on Saturday.
The Green Terror (2-2), who are ranked at No. 24 in the National Wrestling Coaches Association (NWCA) Tournament Top 25, won the final nine matches against the Hornets en route to a 48-6 victory.
Against Messiah, who is ranked at No. 19 in the NWCA Dual Team Top 25, there were four lead changes in a match-up against two ranked teams before the Falcons edged out a 29-15 victory.
Senior
Thomas Monn headlined four wrestlers who posted two wins on the day. He was joined by senior
Romeo Tsai and juniors
Alex Taylor and
Kaden Bryan.
In the opener against Shenandoah (2-3), the Hornets jumped out to a 6-0 lead following a fall by Cannon Long. However, a decision by senior
Avery Cummings and a major decision by Taylor gave McDaniel a 7-6 advantage, one it would not relinquish as it would not surrender another point after winning the final nine matches.
First-year
Isaac Ogunlade picked up his first career dual meet victory with a tech fall at 197 pounds before Bryan, who was ranked fifth in region 3 in the new NWCA rankings on Friday, posted a fall in 2:38 at heavyweight.
Bryan's fall was the first of five-straight for the Green Terror who outscored the Hornets 36-0 over the final six matches. Tsai, Monn, and first years
Andrew Yuen and
Andrew Dolezel each recorded falls before senior
Andre Allen received a forfeit in the final match at 157 pounds to provide the final margin.
Dolezel's fall came at 141 pounds over Sean Rinebolt who is ranked fourth in region 3.
First-year
Neil Sharma earned a major decision in an exhibition at 141 pounds.
McDaniel jumped out to a 9-4 lead against the 19th-ranked Falcons after decisions by Taylor, Bryan, and Tsai. However, Messiah quickly retook the lead with a fall at 133 pounds.
Trailing 14-9, the Green Terror went back in front by one following a fall by Monn at 149. Monn, ranked second nationally and first in region 3, improved to 19-0 this season with his 10th fall against Monger who is ranked fifth in region 3.
Monn is now 121-11 in his career, including 52-1 in dual matches, with 54 falls. He is now five wins shy of the program record of 126 held by
Brock Glotfelty '11 and six falls shy of the program record of 60 held by Glotfelty and Charlie Conaway '00.
With McDaniel leading 15-14, the Falcons (5-1) would win the final three matches, retaking the lead for good with a major decision at 157 pounds.
The Green Terror return to action in the new year on Friday, January 2 when they head to Lexington, Va. to take on Washington and Lee who is ranked at No. 12 in the NWCA Dual Team Top 25 and No. 22 in the NWCA Tournament Top 25.
