Men's Wrestling Upsets No. 12 Elizabethtown on the Road

ELIZABETHTOWN, Pa. - Led by wins in five of the first seven matches, the McDaniel College men's wrestling team posted a 24-22 road win over No. 12 Elizabethtown on Saturday night at Thompson Gymnasium.

The Green Terror (1-0) posted their first win over a nationally-ranked opponent since a 24-19 victory over Lycoming on Nov. 20, 2022 in the Sam Case Duals.

After the Blue Jays edged out a 4-3 decision at 125 pounds, McDaniel responded with four consecutive bonus point wins to take an 18-3 lead after a major decision by senior Andre Allen over Michael Beers at 157 pounds. Beers is ranked sixth in Region 3.

First-year Branden Whyte-Taylor got things started with a second period fall against Corey Cope at 133 pounds. Cope entered the match ranked fourth in Region 3.

Senior Thomas Monn, ranked third in the nation at 149 pounds, picked up his sixth bonus point win in seven matches this season, improving to 7-0 with a tech fall over Stephen Bialek. Monn now has 109 career wins and is now 49-1 in dual matches.

Elizabethtown (0-1) picked up its second win with a major decision by Justice Hockenberry, the region's third-ranked wrestler at 165 pounds.

However, senior Avery Cummings recorded a fall over Gavin Fehr at 165 to put the Green Terror in front 24-7 with three matches remaining.

The Blue Jays needed three-straight falls to win the match with three ranked wrestlers on deck. Ganon Smith and Will Davis, ranked third nationally at 184 and 197 pounds, respectively, each recorded falls to pull the home team within five with one match remaining.

Ranked third in the region, Sav Niewiadomy could not secure the six points needed at heavyweight, managing just a 6-2 decision over senior Kaden Bryan to leave the Blue Jays two points short.

McDaniel returns to action next Saturday at the Wilkes Invitational.
