BALTIMORE, Md. - Alex Gardner scored with less than five minutes left in the first half to give Johns Hopkins a 1-0 win over the McDaniel College men's soccer team in the first round of the Centennial Conference Men's Soccer Championship Tuesday night at Homewood Field.
The Green Terror (9-5-4) were making their second consecutive appearance in the conference tournament after advancing to their first since 2005 a year ago.
Tuesday marked the first postseason match-up between the two teams since Nov. 6, 2004, also a 1-0 win for the Blue Jays at Homewood Field.
The two teams combined for six shots and 12 fouls over the first 40 minutes before Gardner scored off an assist from Jackson Shapiro. Shapiro crossed the ball into the box from the left where Gardner kicked it up to himself and drove it toward the left corner just off the hands of junior
Tate Roth.
McDaniel looked for the equalizer less than two minutes later when first-year
Evan Rigg had a high-quality chance from in tight on the left post, but John Ghanem came out to cut down the angle and smothered the attempt to preserve the one-goal lead.
Junior
Charlie Olson, the leading scorer for the Green Terror, had another chance with just over two minutes remaining, but Ghanem picked up his fourth save of the half to deny Olson's seventh goal of the season.
Each team had three shots with each goalie making one save in the second half as Hopkins (7-6-6) advanced to the semifinals looking to win its third-straight conference championship.
McDaniel will now await selections for the 2025 ECAC Division III Men's Soccer Championship on Monday, Nov. 10. The Green Terror were selected to the 2024 ECAC championship, earning the No. 4 seed, and defeated fifth-seeded Hartford in the first round before falling to No. 1-seed and host, Juniata, in the semifinals, 2-1.
