Second Quarter Lifts No. 16 Carnegie Mellon Over McDaniel

PITTSBURGH – No. 16 Carnegie Mellon scored five touchdowns in the second quarter en route to a 56-7 home win over the McDaniel College football team on Saturday.

The Green Terror (1-3, 0-1 CC) drop the first-ever meeting with the Tartans in Carnegie Mellon's first conference game as a member of the Centennial Conference.

McDaniel forced a punt on Carnegie Mellon's first drive of the day, but the Tartans scored on a two-yard touchdown plunge with 3:22 left in the first quarter. 

Carnegie Mellon (3-1, 1-0 CC) then rattled off five scoring drives in the second quarter, starting with a score just under a minute into the frame. Sophomore David Are blocked a field goal attempt with just over 11 minutes left in the second, recording the Green Terror's second blocked kick of the season. A four-yard touchdown run was followed by a 35-yard pick six to give the Tartans a 28-0 lead, a lead that would expand to 42 at the end of the first half.

A 14-play drive in the fourth quarter resulted in a blocked kick that first year Braden Fritz would recover for McDaniel to keep the drive alive. Senior Micajah Cobbs scored on a two-yard touchdown run with under two minutes left in the fourth to put the Green Terror on the board, scoring his first touchdown of the season. 

Sophomore Jayden Booker completed 12-of-28 pass attempts for 102 yards and two interceptions. Cobbs was the team's leading rusher with 30 yards on eight rushes and a touchdown. First year Jack Penzone had a 47-yard reception for his first career catch and senior Tony Miller caught six passes for 41 yards. 

The Tartans compiled 436 yards of total offense but lost two fumbles and had 13 penalties for 105 yards. The Green Terror won the time-of-possession battle with the Tartans, possessing the ball for over 32 minutes of game time.

McDaniel will continue a two-game road trip when it travels to Ursinus on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
