Turnovers Limit Football in 27-14 Loss to William Paterson

WESTMINSTER, Md. - The McDaniel College football team jumped out to a 7-0 lead, but William Paterson responded with 27 unanswered points en route to a 27-14 victory Saturday on Rembert Field at Kenneth R. Gill Stadium.

The Green Terror (1-2) trailed by just two scores with 2:51 remaining in the third quarter following a 4-yard touchdown run by senior Eric Grinwis. However, the team was held to just 29 yards on its final four drives, turning the ball over on downs on its final three, including one inside the red zone with 9:25 left in the fourth.

McDaniel was hampered offensively by three interceptions and four sacks. It was also just 3-of-15 on third-down conversions and 1-of-6 on fourth-down.

The Green Terror struck first on a 52-yard interception return by senior Bailey Himes that led to a 7-0 lead with 9:27 to play in the opening quarter. It marked the team's first interception return for a touchdown since Mike Dunn returned one 22 yards for a score in a 27-9 win over Juniata at home on Sept. 11, 2021.

The Pioneers (1-2) missed a 26-yard field goal on ensuing possession, but tied the game on its next possession when Nigel Jennings connected with Caleb Rippey on a 62-yard touchdown pass with 43 seconds remaining in the first quarter.

The touchdown was the first of 27 consecutive points for the visitors who led 27-7 following a 2-yard touchdown run by Erik Reinacher with 7:04 left in the third quarter.

Jennings completed 11-of-20 passes for 153 yards and two touchdowns while Rippey had two catches for 90 yards and two scores. Rippey also had a 28-yard touchdown reception from wide receiver Kyree Hinton on a trick play in the third quarter.

Grinwis finished with 79 yards of total offense, completing 8-of-20 passes for 76 yards and rushing for three more and a score. Graduate student Wesley Nchinda was one of three players with three catches for McDaniel as he had three for 38 yards. He also had one kick return for nine yards.

Defensively, senior Alex Brown had eight total tackles, including 2.5 for loss while Himes had seven with one interception and one pass breakup. Junior Demontae Gifford had four tackles, one forced fumble and two quarterback hurries.

After a bye week, the Green Terror return to action on the road at Gettysburg on Friday, Oct. 4 in the first-ever night football game at Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium. Kickoff is at 7 p.m.
