GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The McDaniel College football took an early lead, but two second-half defensive touchdowns led Gettysburg to a 20-7 victory Friday in the first night game in the 59-year history of Shirk Field at Musselman Stadium.
The Green Terror (1-3, 0-1 CC) amassed over 300 yards of total offense and possessed the ball for over 31 minutes, but two interception returns for touchdowns carried the Bullets to a Centennial Conference opening win against McDaniel for the second-straight year.
Sophomore
Angel Granado Jr. had 257 yards of total offense with 175 yards passing and 82 yards rushing. He connected on a 4-yard touchdown pass to senior
Kyle Silver with 11:35 remaining in the second quarter to cap a 9-play, 62-yard drive and give the Green Terror a 7-6 lead.
McDaniel maintained its lead until midway through the third when Nate DeLorenzo picked off a Granado pass and returned it 52 yards for a touchdown to put Gettysburg (2-2, 1-0 CC) back in front. The Bullets missed the two-point conversion and led 12-7 with 6:10 left.
The Green Terror were forced to punt on their ensuing possession, but kept it to a one possession game after senior
Malachi Murphy recorded his first interception of the season off a deflection to stall the Gettysburg drive at the McDaniel 21-yard line.
However, five plays later, the Bullets recorded their second pick six as Nathan LaRosa intercepted Granado and returned it 30 yards. This time, the two-point conversion was successful and the home team led 20-7 with 8:25 to play in the fourth quarter.
The Green Terror were held to a three-and-out on their next possession before Gettysburg secured the win with an 11-play, 38-yard drive that took the ball down to the McDaniel 12-yard line and used over six minutes.
Silver finished with six catches for 59 yards and a touchdown while junior
Grayson Wendel had six catches for 56 yards.
Murphy totaled 11 tackles, including 1.5 for loss, and an interception to lead a defensive effort that limited the Bullets to 4.3 yards per play and 20 points. They came in averaging 7.3 yards per play and 41.3 points per game.
Senior
Bailey Himes had six tackles and two pass breakups.
The Green Terror have forced at least one turnover in all four games and had at least one sack for the third time.
McDaniel returns home for the first time in 21 days next Saturday when it hosts Muhlenberg on Rembert Field at Kenneth R. Gill Stadium beginning at 2 p.m. As part of Student-Athlete Mental Health Week, fans are asked to wear green for mental health awareness as the team participates in Hilinski's Hope.
Founded in memory of Tyler Hilinski, a former quarterback at Washington State who tragically died by suicide in 2018, Hilinski's Hope is a powerful advocacy campaign for mental health resources for student-athletes. It aims to raise awareness, reduce the stigma, and promote mental wellness by reminding collegiate athletes that they are not alone.
