Fourth Quarter Carries Muhlenberg Past McDaniel, 34-6

WESTMINSTER, Md. - Muhlenberg scored 20 fourth-quarter points to blow open a one-possession game en route to a 34-6 Centennial Conference victory over the McDaniel College football team Saturday at Gill Stadium.

The Green Terror (1-4, 0-2 CC) held the nation's top-ranked total offense and passing offense to just 243 yards, including 125 passing through three quarters as they trailed by just eight points, 14-6.

However, the Mules scored on three-straight fourth-quarter possessions, totaling 131 yards and controlling the ball for 10:27.

Muhlenberg (3-2, 1-1 CC) entered the game averaging 562.3 yards of total offense and 355.0 yards passing. Even with the Mules' fourth-quarter performance, McDaniel held them 219 yards below their offensive average and  to 175 yards fewer than their passing total.

After the visitors took a 7-0 lead with just over two minutes remaining in the first quarter, the Green Terror responded with a 5-play, 23-yard drive that was capped off by a 3-yard touchdown pass from sophomore Angel Granado Jr. to junior Kenneth Dempster. The extra-point attempt failed and McDaniel trailed 7-6 with 14:09 left in the second.

McDaniel's lone scoring drive of the game was set up by a 72-yard kickoff return from junior Christian Homer to the Muhlenberg 23-yard line.

The Mules would answer with their longest drive of the game, going 73 yards on seven plays before Joe Repetti scored on a 15-yard run with 10:39 to play.

Neither team found much success over the next 22 minutes before Muhlenberg's three fourth-quarter scores. The Green Terror defense limited the visitors to just 86 yards on 24 plays, but the McDaniel offense was held to only 13 yards on 19 plays.

Granado threw for 104 yards and one touchdown on 10-of-17 passing, but was sacked four times and had one interception. Junior Grayson Wendel hauled in four receptions for 44 yards while senior Sebastian Wiggins had 24 yards receiving.

Freshman Taevon LeGrande led a strong defensive effort with 10 tackles, including his first career sack. Senior Bailey Himes also had 10 tackles while senior Malachi Murphy had six tackles and three pass breakups. The Green Terror had six pass breakups as a team and seven passes defended.

McDaniel plays its next two games on the road beginning next Saturday, Oct. 19 at Dickinson. Kickoff is at 1 p.m.
