Big Innings Lead Shorewomen to Sweep Over Softball

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Washington College scored all 12 of its runs in a Centennial Conference doubleheader against the McDaniel College softball team in just three innings Tuesday en route to a win in both games.

The Green Terror (10-16, 2-4 CC) were led by senior Mandy Butz who went 4-for-6 with a double, home run and two RBIs. She also walked twice and scored three runs.

Junior Hannah Costa got the start inside the circle in both games, totaling 8.2 innings.

The Shorewomen (15-10-1, 6-0 CC) remained unbeaten in conference play, extending their win streak to six.

The home team scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the second, scoring on a bases loaded walk and a two-out, two-run single.

The Green Terror got a run back in the top of the third on a lead-off home run by Butz, her second of the season and third of her career.

Trailing 3-1, McDaniel just missed tying the game in the top of the sixth when senior Makayla Calamita hit a double of the top of the wall in right center to score Butz. However, with the tying run in scoring position, Lexi Barnhart got the final out on an infield pop up to keep the Shorewomen ahead by one.

Barnhart would then retire all three batters in the top of the seventh to pick up her sixth win of the season.

Butz finished 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. Junior Bella Sylvester was a perfect 2-for-2 while senior Paytyn Hazelton also had two hits, going 2-for-4.

Costa scattered eight hits over 6.0 innings while striking out two. She allowed three runs and walked three.

The Shorewomen jumped out to a 5-0 lead in the bottom of the second, scoring five runs on six hits, including an RBI-double and two-run single.

The Green Terror would cut into their deficit with two runs in the top of the third on an RBI-double by Butz and a sacrifice fly by Calamaita.

However, Washington College responded with three runs in the bottom of the third, scoring two on separate RBI-doubles before scoring the third on a wild pitch.

Sylvester had an RBI-triple in the fifth and freshman Ashley Shawyer had an RBI-single in the sixth to cut the McDaniel deficit in half, 8-4, before the Shorewomen added their final run, unearned, on an RBI-single in the bottom of the sixth.

Butz added another two hits in game two, going 2-for-3 with a double and walk while Shawyer went 2-for-3.

Costa made her second consecutive start in the circle, allowing eight runs on 10 hits over 2.2 innings.

McDaniel begins a 12-game home stand on Saturday when it welcomes Franklin & Marshall to the Softball Park for a doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
