Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Fourth-Quarter Comeback Falls Short in 12-11 Loss to Fords

WESTMINSTER, Md. - The McDaniel College women's lacrosse team scored four goals over the final five minutes, but its comeback came up one goal short in 12-11 loss to No. 23 Haverford Saturday at Gill Stadium.

The Green Terror (6-6, 1-3 CC) trailed by five with under six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, but a turnover in the last 30 seconds prevented them from being able to complete their comeback against one of the last three unbeaten teams in league play.

Senior Emma Miller finished with five goals and now has 53 this season. She now has 135 for her career, moving her into eighth place in program history past Julia Jacobs who had 132 from 2012-15.

Miller also has 171 career points to rank 11th in team history, five away from cracking the top-10. Anna Kangas totaled 176 points from 1987-90.

McDaniel led 3-1 after the first quarter before the Fords scored the first six goals of the second to take a 7-3 lead with 3:58 remaining.

Nonetheless, led by two goals from Miller and two assists from senior Gaby Kohr, the Green Terror scored three goals in the final 1:48 of the first half to pull within one at halftime, 7-6.

Led by three goals from Brooke Epstein, Haverford (8-3, 4-0 CC) scored five of the first six goals in the second half to take its largest lead, 12-7 with 9:11 to play in the fourth quarter.

Trailing by five, McDaniel forced turnovers on the Fords' next four possessions while turning three of them into goals as it cut the deficit to two with 2:17 remaining.

After sophomore Kat Thayer won the ensuing draw control, Miller capped a four-goal run for the Green Terror with her fifth goal of the game with 1:28 left.

However, after winning their fourth consecutive draw control, a turnover with 28 seconds remaining would give the ball back to the visitors who proceeded to run out the clock and escape with the one-goal victory.

Kohr finished with four assists fro McDaniel while senior Emma Legacy added three goals. Thayer had one goal, three ground balls, three draw controls and two caused turnovers.

Epstein totaled six goals for Haverford who had 12 caused turnovers and four players with two each.

The Green Terror have a week off before returning to action next Saturday, April 13 against Swarthmore. Opening draw is set for 3 p.m. following the men's game against Haverford.

The game will be part of the Centennial Conference initiative to raise mental health awareness in partnership with conference chapters of The Hidden Opponent, an accredited non-profit and advocacy group that raises awareness for student-athletes mental health and addresses the stigma within sports culture. Fans are encouraged to wear green to show their support of the initiative.
