WESTMINSTER, Md. - Senior
Taylor Routzahn went 2-for-3 with three RBIs in game one as the McDaniel College softball team split a non-conference doubleheader with Hood Wednesday at the Softball Park.
The Green Terror (17-21) extended their win streak to a season-long five games with a win in the opener before their five-run rally in the bottom of the seventh of game two came up just short.
Routzahn finished the day 4-for-7 with four RBIs while senior
Makayla Calamita also had four hits, going 4-for-8
McDaniel 5, Hood 2
Routzahn accounted for four of the team's five runs in the opener, driving in three runs while scoring another. She staked the Green Terror to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first, driving in the first two runs with an RBI-single to score Calamita and senior
Mandy Butz before scoring the third on a passed ball.
The Blazers (11-18) got a run back in the second before Routzahn drove in her third run with an RBI-single to score Butz in the third and increase the McDaniel lead to 4-1.
Butz had an RBI-single in the bottom of the fourth to make it 5-1 before Kara Heidlauf hit her first career home run in the sixth to provide the final margin.
Routzahn went 2-for-3 with a walk and three RBIs while Butz and freshman
Caitlin Boden each had two hits, going 2-for-4.
Freshman
Amy Anderson picked up her second career win in the circle, scattering seven hits over 7.0 innings while allowing just two runs and striking out five.
Hood 7, McDaniel 5
The Blazers led 7-0 after six innings, scoring four runs on two, two-run home runs by Jocelyn Pfleiger in the first and sixth inning.
Hood built a seven run lead while holding the Green Terror to just seven hits. McDaniel also stranded seven runners on base.
However, an error by the Blazers on what should have been the second out of the inning allowed the Green Terror to load the bases with one out and begin to mount a comeback.
An RBI-single by freshman
Riley Jackson started the scoring before Routzahn picked up her fourth RBI of the day with a single to score Butz.
A sacrifice fly by senior
Paytyn Hazelton pulled McDaniel within four before a two-run double by junior
Jessica Millard cut that in half, 7-5.
With the tying run at the plate, Jordan Long got freshman
Anna Putnam to ground out to third for the game's final out.
Millard was 3-for-4 with two RBIs while Calamita also went 3-for-4. Jackson and Routzahn were each 2-for-4 with one RBI.
The Green Terror wrap up the regular season on Saturday with a key Centennial Conference doubleheader at Muhlenberg. The Mules are currently in a three-way tie for fourth place in the conference standings, one game ahead of McDaniel. The top five teams advance to the 2024 Centennial Conference Championship.
