Softball Battles Mules in Program's Second-Longest Game

ALLENTOWN, Pa. - A 13-inning, 27-run battle in game one highlighted Saturday's season-ending doubleheader for the McDaniel College softball team against Muhlenberg at Cedarcreek Field.

At 13 innings, the opener marked the second-longest game in program history for the Green Terror (17-23, 6-10 CC).

The longest game in team history happened on May 12, 2012 when McDaniel defeated Ferrum in the NCAA regional in 14 innings, 3-1. Assistant coach Caroline Brehm was a freshman on that team and set a new school and Centennial Conference record with 20 strikeouts in earning the win.

On Saturday, seniors Mandy Butz and Taylor Routzahn each totaled four hits while senior Makayla Calamita had four RBIs.

Muhlenberg 13, McDaniel 12 (13 innings)

Trailing 6-4 in the top of the seventh, freshman Libertie Schatzman and junior Jessica Millard hit back-to-back RBI-singles to tie the game and force extra innings.

From there, each team would exchange runs over the next three innings before the Green Terror scored three runs in the top of the 11th to take a 12-9 lead. Freshman Ashley Shawyer hit a two-run single before senior Paytyn Hazelton scored on a throwing error.

The Mules (23-14, 9-7 CC) would tie the game with three runs of their own in the bottom of the 11th, including two on a wild pitch and the tying run on an RBI-triple.

Each team would plate a run in the 12th before Muhlenberg retired all three batters in the top of the 13th before winning on a walk-off RBI-single in the bottom of the inning.

Routzahn went 3-for-6 while Calamita was 2-for-6 with a double and three RBIs. Shawyer drove in four runs while junior Bella Sylvester was 2-for-6 with a double, triple and two RBIs.

Junior Hannah Costa went the distance in the circle, allowing just three earned runs over 12.1 innings and striking out five.

Muhlenberg 7, McDaniel 1

In the final game of the season, Calamita tied the game at 1-1 with a bases loaded walk in the top of the third, but Muhlenberg answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning, including the go-ahead run on wild pitch.

The Mules added two more runs on a two-run double in the fourth before adding one on an RBI-double in the fifth and one on an RBI-double in the sixth.

The Green Terror were limited to just five hits with two coming from Butz.

With two hits on the day, Calamita has 137 for her career, tying her with Candice Kuligowski (2000-03) for 15th in program history. Calamita is also tied with Kuligowski for ninth in team history with 84 career RBIs.
