Hubinger Homers Twice in 16-10 Win at Washington College

CHESTERTOWN, Md. - Graduate student Joey Hubinger hit two home runs and had five RBIs as the McDaniel College baseball team used a seven run ninth to solidify a 16-10 road win at Washington College Tuesday.

The Green Terror (19-13, 10-5 CC) maintained their one-game lead for third place in the Centennial Conference standings with their third-straight win. They are also just one game behind Dickinson for second with three conference games remaining.

Hubinger went 2-for-4 with a walk, two home runs, five RBIs and three runs scored. He is the third different player to hit two home runs in one game for McDaniel this season, joining freshman Patrick Kelly and sophomore Todd Calhoun.

The game featured four ties and five lead changes. The two teams also combined to hit six home runs and used 16 pitchers.

After a two-run home run by Drew Kinsey gave the Shoremen (8-28, 3-12 CC) a 6-4 lead in the bottom of the third, freshman Shea McKenna hit a two-run home run to tie the game in the fifth and kick start a streak of five consecutive runs for the visitors who led 9-6 after seven innings.

Washington scored two runs in the bottom of the eighth to pull within one before the Green Terror loaded the bases with one out in the top of the ninth. Sophomore Robert Weer started the scoring when he scored on a wild pitch before Hubinger cleared the bases with his fifth home run of the season, a three-run shot that scored senior Tyler Yohn and freshman Ethan Haddock.

After Hubinger tied sophomore Ben Davis for the team lead in home runs, Davis hit his sixth during the next at-bat to push the lead to six, 14-8.

Freshman Zach Gaeta had an RBI-double and freshman DJ Stolba had an RBI-single to cap the seven-run inning and put McDaniel in front, 16-8.

Kinsey hit a two-run double with two outs in the bottom of the ninth before junior Conor Henderson struck out Zach Stolze to seal the team's third-straight win against the Shoremen and second in-a-row on the road.

Davis went 5-for-5 with one RBI and three runs while McKenna was 3-for-6 with two RBIs and senior Jake Smith was 3-for-4 with one RBI.

Graduate student Ryan Martino improved to 4-0 this season and picked up his 13th career win after holding Washington without a hit and striking out two in 1.0 inning of work.

The two teams conclude their two-game series on Friday at McDaniel's Preston Field. First pitch is at 3:30 p.m.
