BALTIMORE, Md. - Sophomore
Todd Calhoun hit his first two home runs of the season, but a four-run sixth carried No. 11 Johns Hopkins to a 12-7 victory over the McDaniel College baseball team Friday at Babb Field.
The Green Terror (16-13, 7-5 CC) held a 6-5 lead following a three-run home run by Calhoun in the top of the fifth before the Blue Jays scored five unanswered runs to take a 10-6 advantage after six.
Calhoun drove in five of the team's first six runs and finished the day 2-for-4 with a walk, two home runs, and five RBIs.
The two teams combined for 19 runs and seven home runs. Shawn Steuerer hit three home runs for Hopkins, going 3-for-4 with six RBIs, while Caleb Cyr had two as he was 2-for-4 with four RBIs.
Steuerer got the scoring started with a bases loaded walk as part of a three-run first for the Blue Jays (23-8, 11-1 CC).
McDaniel tied the game with three runs in the second on a two-run home run by Calhoun and RBI-single by senior
Tyler Yohn.
Steuerer put the home team back in front with a two-run shot in the third before Calhoun blasted a three-run homer to left center in the fifth to put the Green Terror ahead by one.
Steuerer homered again in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game for the second time at 6-6. The solo shot was the first of five consecutive runs for Hopkins as Cyr and Steuerer each hit two-run homers in the sixth to put the home team in front, 10-6.
Freshman
Ethan Haddock had an RBI-single in the eighth to cut McDaniel's deficit to three, but Cyr hit his second two-run home run in the bottom of the inning to provide the final margin.
The Green Terror totaled 14 hits, their most in a losing effort this season. Freshman
Shea McKenna had five, going a perfect 5-for-5 while Haddock finished 3-for-5 with one RBI.
Five McDaniel pitchers combined for eight strikeouts and held Hopkins to 13 hits, but six went for extra bases, including five home runs.
Meanwhile, the Blue Jays had three pitchers combine for 14 strikeouts, including starter Kieren Collins who had seven despite allowing six runs on 10 hits through 5.0 innings.
The Green Terror return home to host a crucial Centennial Conference doubleheader with Swarthmore on Saturday for Senior Day. First pitch is at noon.
McDaniel is currently tied with Haverford for the fifth and final spot in the 2024 Centennial Conference Baseball Championship. Both teams are currently half-a-game behind Swarthmore and Franklin & Marshall for the third and fourth place.
