Eight-Goal Fourth Quarter Leads McDaniel Past Bridgewater

WESTMINSTER, Md. - Trailing by one entering the fourth quarter, the McDaniel College women's lacrosse team scored eight unanswered goals en route to a 14-7 victory over Bridgewater (VA) Thursday night inside Gill Stadium.

The Green Terror (3-2) won their second-straight at home and third in-a-row against the Eagles in the first meeting between the two teams since 2013.

Sophomore Addison Utterback scored three of her career-high four goals in the decisive fourth quarter while senior Emma Legacy added two goals and one assist.

The game featured four ties and three lead changes with McDaniel taking its first lead, 6-5, when senior Emma Miller scored her team-leading 21st goal of the season with 11:15 remaining in the third quarter.

However, Bridgewater (2-2) scored the final two goals of the quarter to regain the advantage. Despite being out-shot 26-11 through three, the Eagles led 7-6 heading into the final 15 minutes.

Senior Michaela Reid tied the game for the fourth time with her second goal of the season just 1:05 into the final frame before Utterback scored what proved to be the game-winner less than a minute later. Legacy scored on a free-position shot just 43 seconds later and Utterback completed her first career hat-trick with 11:29 left to put the Green Terror in front by three, 10-7.

McDaniel scored the first four goals of the fourth in a span of only 2:26.

Sophomore Kat Thayer scored the first of her two fourth-quarter tallies with 9:10 to play before goals by Legacy and Utterback and the second from Thayer capped the 8-0 run by the Green Terror.

Utterback had four goals and four ground balls while Legacy added three goals, two assists, six ground balls and four draw controls. Miller had one goal, two assists and 10 draw controls with Thayer totaling two goals, one assist, two ground balls, three draw controls and three caused turnovers.

Junior Sadie Bowman also had three caused turnovers and two ground balls to lead a defensive effort that limited Bridgewater to just 12 shots, including one in the fourth quarter. The defense also helped force the Eagles into 29 turnovers. Sophomore Caleigh Kohr had two saves while sophomore Mia McElwee had two caused turnovers.

McDaniel won 18 of 25 draw controls and picked up 28 ground balls. The team scored just six goals on 26 shots through three quarters as Maisen Jenkins made 12 saves for the visitors before allowing eight goals on 12 shots in the fourth.
