MECHANICSBURG, Pa. - The McDaniel College softball team was limited to one hit in game one before its four-run comeback fell short in game two of a doubleheader at Messiah Thursday.
The Green Terror (8-10) have lost their first four games on their six-game road trip which concludes this Saturday when they open Centennial Conference play at Haverford.
A trio of players had two hits for McDaniel, including senior
Paytyn Hazelton who was the lone player to have a hit in both games for the visitors. Junior
Bella Sylvester and freshman
Riley Jackson each went 2-for-3 in game two.
Messiah 6, McDaniel 0
Lydia Collison was dominant in the circle for the Falcons, tossing a complete game, one-hit shutout while striking out seven.
Collison allowed just four base runners, including two in the fourth as the Green Terror had runners on first and second with one out. However, she retired the next two batters on fly outs in the infield to keep the visitors scoreless.
Messiah, who took a 1-0 lead on a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the first, was limited to just one run until the bottom of the fourth when it scored three runs on four hits and one error.
Four of the Falcons' six runs were unearned, including their final two in the bottom of the sixth to provide the final margin.
Hazelton recorded the lone hit for McDaniel with a single to left center in the fourth as she finished 1-for-3.
Freshman
Libertie Schatzman made her seventh start of the season in the circle, allowing six runs on hits over 6.0 innings while walking one and striking out one.
Messiah 7, McDaniel 5
The Green Terror jumped out to a 1-0 lead on an RBI-single by junior
Olivia Dresser with the bases loaded in the second.
The Falcons (11-10) responded by scoring the game's next seven runs, including four in the third on a two-run homer by McKenzie Shannon and a two-run single by Ali Wagner.
Messiah plated three more runs during consecutive at-bats in the fourth. Ali Book started with an RBI-double before Rebekah Wiley traded places with Book with an RBI-double. Wagner then singled up the middle to score Wiley and give the Falcons a 7-1 lead.
McDaniel began a rally in the top of the fifth, scoring four runs to cut its deficit to two. Sylvester, Hazelton and senior
Makayla Calamita each had RBI-singles while senior
Mandy Butz scored on a wild pitch.
Trailing 7-5, that would be as close as the Green Terror would get as Maggie Chinnadurai was dominant out of the bullpen, allowing just two hits over the final three innings to pick up her first save.
Sylvester was 2-for-3 with one RBI while Jackson also went 2-for-3. Dresser was 1-for-2 with a walk and one RBI.
Freshman
Amy Anderson made her first career start in the circle for McDaniel before giving way to junior
Hannah Costa who pitched the final 4.0 innings in relief.
The Green Terror open conference play on Saturday at Haverford. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
