Mandy Butz and freshman
Anna Putnam each had four hits, including two in game two as the McDaniel College softball team split a doubleheader at Haverford Saturday in the Centennial Conference opener for both teams.
The Green Terror (9-11, 1-1 CC) fell victim to five errors and one wild pitch which led to six unearned runs in the opener before rallying from a two-run deficit with the game's final five runs in game two.
Butz finished the day 4-for-8 with a home run and two RBIs while Putnam also went 4-for-8 with one RBI. Senior
Makayla Calamita was 3-for-8 with a home run and three RBIs.
Haverford 8, McDaniel 7
Game one was tied at 1-1 entering the seventh before the Green Terror scored three runs in the top of inning to take its first lead. Junior
Olivia Dresser scored on a wild pitch to break the tie before freshman
Ashley Shawyer hit a two-run double to put the visitors in front, 4-1.
After a lead-off double and back-to-back singles, the Fords trailed by two and had runners on first and second before an error loaded the bases. A sacrifice fly pulled the team within one before a fly out would have ended the game. Instead, a second error loaded the bases and a wild pitch scored the tying run, sending the game to extra innings.
Utilizing the international tiebreaker, each scored a run in the eighth before McDaniel plated two in the top of the ninth to take a 7-5 lead.
However, Haverford loaded the bases in the bottom of the inning and after scoring on an RBI-ground out, scored two runs on an error to walk-off with an 8-7 win.
Butz and Putnam each went 2-for-5 while Calamita was 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBIs.
Freshman
Libertie Schatzman suffered the loss in relief despite not allowing an earned run over an inning-and-two-thirds.
McDaniel 8, Haverford 5
The Green Terror jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, scoring two runs on wild pitches before adding the third on a passed ball.
The Fords (7-12, 1-1 CC) scored five unanswered runs over the next three innings to take a 5-3 advantage, highlighted by a three-run second.
After an RBI-single by Putnam in the fourth, Butz tied the game at 5-5 with her first home run of the season and second of her career to highlight a three-run fifth before junior
Bella Sylvester scored on wild pitch to put the visitors in front to stay, 6-5.
Senior
Paytyn Hazelton made it 7-5 when she scored on a throwing error before Calamita added an RBI-single in the sixth to provide the final margin.
Butz went 2-for-3 with a home run, two walks and one RBI while Putnam was 2-for-3 with one RBI. Calamita also had two hits and one RBI while junior
Jessica Millard went 2-for-4.
Schatzman went the distance in the circle, allowing 12 hits and walking just one to earn her fourth win of the season.
McDaniel returns home for the first time since March 20 on Tuesday when it hosts a Centennial Conference doubleheader with Gettysburg beginning at 3 p.m.
