Softball Falls at Catholic to Begin Six-Game Road Trip

WESTMINSTER, Md. - Junior Bella Sylvester totaled three hits to lead the McDaniel College softball team who was swept in a doubleheader in the nation's capital at Catholic Tuesday.

The Green Terror (8-8) fell in a pitcher's duel in the opener before the Cardinals exploded for 12 runs on 12 hits in game two.

Sylvester went 3-for-6 with one RBI and one run scored on the day while senior Mandy Butz added two hits and one run.

Junior Hannah Costa had a strong performance inside the circle in game one, allowing just six hits over 6.0 innings while striking out one. The Cardinals scored a run in the first on a sacrifice fly before adding the game-winning run on a two-out, RBI-single in the bottom of the fourth.

The Green Terror managed to break through with a run in the top of the sixth, loading the bases with one out, but managed just one unearned run as Catholic turned a double play to end the inning and strand two runners on base in scoring position.

Aubrynn Arcement picked up the win for the Cardinals after limiting McDaniel to just three hits over 7.0 innings and not issuing any walks.

Sylvester, freshman Riley Jackson and freshman Libertie Schatzman each had one hit for the visitors.

After a defensive struggle in the opener, game two was a slug fest.  The Cardinals (14-6) scored a run in all four offensive innings, rallying from a 4-2 deficit to score the game's final 10 runs.

The Green Terror held two separate two-run leads, scoring two runs on a two-run single by senior Paytyn Hazelton in the first before adding two more in the second on an RBI-single by Sylvester and the last after Butz reached on a two-out Catholic fielding error.

The Cardinals matched the visitors' two-run first with two unearned runs in the bottom of the inning before erasing their second two-run deficit with a four-run second to take a 6-4 lead.

Catholic scored another four runs in the bottom of the third, including one on an RBI-triple and one on a passed ball, and its final two on two RBI-singles in the fourth.

Sylvester was 2-for-3 with one RBI while Butz was also 2-for-3. Hazelton went 1-for-1 with a walk and two RBIs.

Schatzman made her sixth start of the season inside the circle before freshman Arianna Kelly made her third appearance in relief.

McDaniel returns to action tomorrow when they travel to Mechanicsburg, PA for a doubleheader against Messiah. First pitch is at 3 p.m.
