LEESBURG, Fla. - The McDaniel College softball team totaled 13 runs on 22 hits as it won two games on Monday at The Spring Games, beating UMass Dartmouth in the opener, 4-3, before posting a convincing 9-2 victory over Skidmore.
The Green Terror (5-1) have won three-straight and have won five of their first six games this season.
Freshman
Ashley Shawyer led the team with four hits and three RBIs, going 4-for-6 on the day with a walk while senior
Bella Sylvester was 3-for-8 with two RBIs.
Senior
Makayla Calamita also had three hits and with a single in the top of the seventh against Skidmore, became the 41st player in program history to reach 100 career hits. In 96 career games, she has totaled 100 hits in 293 at-bats for a .341 batting average.
Calamita is the third Green Terror to reach 100 career hits in the last two seasons after
Katy Newton and
Evie Craig each reached the mark last year.
McDaniel 4, UMass Dartmouth 3
The Green Terror used timely hitting in the opener as they had nine players record one hit each, all of which were singles.
After a scoreless first inning, Shawyer drove in the first run of the game with a single to left to score senior
Paytyn Hazelton before sophomore
Ryan Smith scored Sylvester with a fielder's choice to put McDaniel in front, 2-0.
The Corsairs (2-3) immediately responded, tying the game with two runs in the top of the third.
Sylvester drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI-single to left center in the fifth before Hazelton scored the game-winning run from second on an throwing error.
UMass Darmouth pulled within one with a two-out, RBI-single in the seventh, but freshman
Libertie Schatzman picked up her second win in as many starts after she retired the next batter with a ground out to third.
Schatzman totaled her second complete game, scattering six hits over 7.0 innings with two strikeouts.
Shawyer went 1-for-2 with a walk and RBI while Sylvester and Calamita each were 1-for-3 with an RBI.
McDaniel 9, Skidmore 2
The Green Terror blew open a scoreless game with eight runs in the top of the second, highlighted by a two-run single from Shawyer. The team sent 13 batters to plate and scored eight runs on eight hits, but only two of the runs were earned as the Thoroughbreds committed three errors in the inning.
Freshman
Caitlin Boden drove in the first run of her career with an RBI-ground out to score Shawyer for what proved to be the game-winning run and put McDaniel ahead 3-0.
Senior
Mandy Butz drove in the final run for the Green Terror with an RBI-ground out in the top of the third to put the visitors in front, 9-0.
Trailing 9-1 with two outs in the bottom of the fifth, Skidmore (1-3) avoided the run rule when Claire Stone was hit-by-pitch with the bases loaded to score Cortney Somsky and pull the team within seven.
Shawyer finished the game 3-for-4 with two RBIs while Calamita, Hazelton aand Sylvester each were 2-for-5. Hazelton also had an RBI and scored twice.
Junior
Hannah Costa picked up her second win in as many days as she allowed just two runs on five hits over 5.0 innings while striking out four. Freshman
Amy Anderson gave up just one hit over the final two innings.
After an off day on Tuesday, McDaniel will return to action on Wednesday with games against Hamilton and Babson beginning at 12:45 p.m.
