LEESBURG, Fla. - The McDaniel College softball team scored 10 runs against Hamilton in the opener Wednesday before being shutout by Babson in the second game on day three of the team's participation in The Spring Games.
The Green Terror (6-2) scored 10 runs on 14 hits in a 10-7 win against the Continentals before the Beavers held them to just two hits in a 1-0 loss in game two.
Freshman
Ashlyn Shawyer totaled four hits on the day, going 4-for-7 with one RBI while senior
Paytyn Hazelton also had a hit in both games, going 2-for-6 with one RBI. Both extended their hitting streak to four games.
McDaniel 10, Hamilton 7
The Green Terror won their fourth-straight game with a season-high 10 runs while finishing one hit shy of a season high.
McDaniel got things started with five runs in the bottom of the first, highlighted by a two-run single by sophomore
Ryan Smith. Shawyer and senior
Taylor Routzahn also had RBI-singles while junior
Bella Sylvester led things off by scoring on a wild pitch.
The Continentals (4-2) got two runs back in the top of the second with a two-run double before a solo home run in the top of the third pulled them within two, 5-3.
The Green Terror extended the lead to seven with two runs in the fourth on RBIs by Hazelton and senior
Makayla Calamita before adding three in the fifth. Sylvester drove in what proved to be the game-winning run with a single to score freshman
Libertie Schatzman while senior
Mandy Butz had an RBI-single and Calamita scored Sylvester on an RBI-ground out.
Hamilton threatened in the top of the seventh, scoring four unearned runs on three hits and two McDaniel errors. After scoring the first run on an error that would have ended the game, the Continentals cut the deficit to three on a three-run double before junior
Hannah Costa recorded her third strikeout of the game to secure her third win of the season.
Shawyer and Butz each had three hits and one RBI as both went 3-for-4. Despite allowing 11 hits and six walks, Costa surrendered just three earned runs.
Babson 1, McDaniel 0
Offense was limited in the second game as the Green Terror and Beavers combined for just six hits and seven baserunners in what was a pitching duel between Schatzman and Katie Vlacich.
The teams had just three hits between them headed into the bottom of the sixth when Sophia Pak led off with a double for Babson. She was sacrificed to third before scoring the game's only run on a single by Sara Moore. Emily Walsh followed with another single before Schatzman retired the final two batters to minimize the damage.
Unfortunately, McDaniel could not mount a rally in the seventh asa Vlacich retired the team in order to pick up her third win while handing Schatzman her first loss.
Hazelton and Shawyer each went 1-for-3 for the Green Terror and were the only two base runners as Vlacich did not allow a walk and struck out five.
Schatzman allowed just four hits and one walk while striking out two in 6.0 innings.
McDaniel returns to action Thursday morning against Kean at 10 aa.m. before taking on Wilmington College at 12:15 p.m.
