LEESBURG, Fla. - Junior
Taylor Routzahn hit a three-run double against Occidental to lead the McDaniel College softball team to a split on the opening day of The Spring Games Sunday at the Sleepy Hollow Softball Complex.
The Green Terror (3-1) began the day with a 3-1 loss to Wisconsin-Platteville before scoring six unanswered runs against the Tigers in a 6-1 victory in the nightcap.
Routzahn went 1-for-3 with a double while senior
Makayla Calamita totaled three hits with two doubles, two RBIs and two runs scored.
Wisconsin-Platteville 3, McDaniel 1
The two teams combined to allow just 11 hits over seven innings, but the Pioneers used timely offense to edge out a two-run victory in the opener.
In the bottom of the first, Wisconsin-Platteville (6-0) took advantage of a two-out error to score the game's first run and take an early 1-0 lead.
The Pioneers added to their advantage in the bottom of the third, scoring two unearned runs after what should have been a 1-2-3 inning for the Green Terror. Instead, they found themselves trailing by three after three.
The lead proved to be enough for Carlie Jo Brownlee who improved to 2-0 in the circle this season as she did not allow a run over 2.1 innings while scattering four hits and striking out three.
Meanwhile, her counterpart, junior
Hannah Costa, also had a strong performance as she did not surrender an earned run in a complete game effort. She held Wisconsin-Platteville to just six hits over 6.0 innings and struck out three.
Senior
Paytyn Hazelton led McDaniel at the plate, totaling two of the team's five hits as she went 2-for-3. Senior
Mandy Butz drove in the team's lone run with an RBI-ground out in the seventh.
McDaniel 6, Occidental 1
The Tigers struck first, scoring their only run in the top of the first after Sam Palacio walked and later scored on a wild pitch. Junior
Kattie Hutchison managed to allow only one run in the inning, working her way out of a bases loaded situation with just one out.
The Green Terror also loaded the bases with just one out in the bottom of the inning before Routzahn cleared them with a double to left center to give McDaniel a 3-1 lead after one.
That would be all the support Hutchinson needed as she held Occidental (1-7) scoreless over the next three innings, limiting the team to just two hits and two walks.
Hutchinson earned her first win of the season and was one of three Green Terror pitchers to hold the Tigers to just one run on only five hits, joining freshmen
Arianna Kelly and
Amy Anderson who made their first career appearances inside the circle.
Freshman
Keonna Gonzalez picked up her first career hit and RBI with a triple in the fifth before Calamita provided the final two runs with a double in the sixth. Freshman
Caitlin Boden also recorded her first career hit with a single in the sixth.
Calamita went 2-for-3 with a walk, two runs and two RBIs while Routzahn finished 1-for-3.
McDaniel returns to action with two more games on Monday against UMass Dartmouth and Skidmore beginning at 2:30 p.m.
