COLLEGEVILLE, Pa. - A fall in just 10 seconds by sophomore
Ryan Ohler highlighted a split by the McDaniel College men's wrestling team in a Centennial Conference doubleheader Saturday at Ursinus' Helfferich Hall.
The Green Terror (10-6, 3-2 CC) posted their third 10-win season in five under head coach
Mason Goretsas '15 with a 28-18 victory over Merchant Marine in the opener. They dropped a 22-20 decision to the host Bears in the finale on a fall in last match at 285 pounds.
McDaniel fell behind 9-0 to the Mariners (5-8, 1-4 CC) before reeling off five-straight wins to take a commanding 25-9 lead. One of those wins came from Ohler at 165 pounds as he recorded a fall in just 10 seconds against Matthew Ferrucci. It is the fourth-fastest fall in program history, three seconds off the record.
Ohler's fall, his sixth in 12 wins at 165 pounds this season, proved to be the game-winner as it put the Green Terror ahead, 22-9.
Freshman
Connor Bollinger and sophomore
Thomas Monn also recorded falls at 141 and 149 pounds, respectively. Senior
Jaedyn Harris picked up his 20th win of the season with a decision at 197 pounds.
In the second match of the day against Ursinus, McDaniel jumped out to another lead, this time 10 points, 17-7, after three consecutive wins by Monn, Ohler and junior
Xavier Howard. Howard improved to 23-4 this season with an injury default victory. He is currently second on the team in wins this season, trailing only the 26 by Monn.
Back-to-back wins by fall and decision pulled the Bears (10-2, 5-0 CC) within one, 17-16, before Harris, ranked ninth nationally and first in the Mideast Region, edged out a 2-1 win in a tiebreaker against Nils Update who is ranked fourth in the Mideast Region.
Trailing 20-16, Ursinus needed a major decision at 285 pounds to tie the match, but Jake Ahmad, ranked fourth in the Mideast Region, record a six-point fall in just 1:07 to secure the two-point win for the defending Centennial Conference champions.
The Green Terror return to action next Saturday, Feb. 10 when they host the 2024 Centennial Conference Wrestling Championships inside the Gill Center beginning at 10 a.m.
