WESTMINSTER, Md. - A tip-in by Shae Mercer at the buzzer in overtime gave Haverford a 61-59 victory over the McDaniel College women's basketball team Saturday on Rebecca L. Martin Court in the regular-season finale for both teams.
The Green Terror (12-13, 7-13 CC) finish with 12 wins, the most for the team in the last five seasons. McDaniel also went 12-13 during the 2018-19 season.
Ironically, Saturday marked the first overtime game for McDaniel since a 69-63 win at Haverford on Feb. 8, 2014. It was also the first overtime contest at home for the Green Terror since Nov. 16, 2013 when they defeated Wilkes in the McDaniel Tip-Off Tournament championship game, 60-57.
The game featured 11 ties and 17 lead changes and was tied at 59-59 with 24 seconds remaining in overtime following a driving layup by junior
Lil Overcash. She was also fouled on the play, but couldn't convert the three-point play and despite grabbing the offensive rebound, McDaniel gave the ball back to the Fords on a turnover with 20 seconds to play.
Following a timeout, Ally Landau missed a driving layup with two seconds left before Mercer was there to tip-in as time expired giving the visitors their fifth-straight win in Westminster after the Green Terror posted a 49-43 win at Gooding Arena back on Nov. 30.
Landau finished with 36 points for Haverford (8-17, 5-15 CC) and played the entire 45 minutes. She was 15-of-38 from the floor, including 6-of-12 from three-point range. Meanwhile, Mercer finished with four points, nine rebounds, two assists and three steals.
Overcash finished with a career-high 21 points on 7-of-14 shooting to go along with five assists. She was also 6-of-8 from the free throw line.
Neither team led by more than five, but McDaniel led for the majority of the time at 20:17 compared to 13:40 for the Fords. The visitors led 52-48 with 1:21 left in the fourth quarter before a three by Overcash pulled the Green Terror within one with 53 seconds remaining.
Gia Flamini hit one of two free throws with 24 seconds to play before Overcash found freshman
Raegan Lenz open underneath for a layup with five seconds left to force overtime.
Freshman
Teya McConnaha totaled her fourth double double with 17 points and 12 rebounds while Lenz finished with 10 points and six rebounds.
