WESTMINSTER, Md. - Trailing by 20 late in the third quarter, the McDaniel College football team mounted a rally that came up just short in a 27-20 loss to Gettysburg Saturday on Rembert Field at Gill Stadium for Homecoming.
The Green Terror (0-4, 0-1 CC) outscored the Bullets 13-0 in the fourth quarter, scoring on each of its two possessions to pull within one score with 1:17 remaining.
However, Gettysburg recovered the on-side kick and converted a key fourth down on a fake punt with under one minute remaining to seal its first win against McDaniel since 2016.
A 28-yard field goal by Rob Meyer following a 77-yard interception return by Anad Charles gave the Bullets (2-2, 1-0 CC) their largest lead, 27-7 with 6:58 remaining in the third quarter.
Trailing by the same margin with 10:49 to play in the fourth, freshman
Angel Granado led the Green Terror on back-to-back scoring drives, both capped by touchdown passes to senior
Hunter Sigler. The first came on a 7-yard strike with 7:18 left before the second on a 15-yard pass with 1:17 to play after the McDaniel defense forced a turnover on downs.
The Green Terror totaled 140 of their 374 yards of total offense in the fourth quarter and out-gained the visitors, 257-113 in the second half. It marks the third game out of four this season in which McDaniel has has totaled more yards than its opponent.
Granado took 18 snaps, completing 9-of-14 passes for 124 yards and two touchdowns while rushing for another 14 yards on three carries.
Meanwhile, Sigler finished with three catches for 35 yards and two scores. In three career games against Gettysburg, he has totaled 13 catches for 163 yards and five touchdowns.
For the second-straight game, points off turnovers proved to be costly for the Green Terror as the Bullets scored 20 points off four McDaniel miscues. Against William Paterson on Sept. 16, the Green Terror surrendered 28 points off turnovers. They have totaled 11 turnovers in the last two games and 17 this season.
While Sigler found the end zone twice, graduate student
Sean Carter led the team offensively, hauling in 12 catches for 137 yards, both career highs. He leads the team this season with 31 receptions, an average of just under eight per game. He is currently ranked second in the Centennial Conference in receptions per game.
Defensively, graduate student
Mike Dunn led the way with nine tackles, including 0.5 for loss. Freshman
Chris Wilson had five solo tackles, including 1.0 for loss, one interception and two pass breakups. In his first career start, sophomore
Gabe White totaled eight tackles and QB hurry.
As a team, McDaniel is currently ranked second in Division IIIÂ in tackles for loss and fifth in sacks.
The Green Terror head to Allentown, Pa. next week to take on Muhlenberg. The Mules are currently ranked at No. 17 in the American Football Coaches Association Division III poll and at No. 23 in the D3football.com Top 25. Kickoff from Scotty Wood Stadium is at 2 p.m.
