Turnovers, Special Teams Lead William Paterson Past Football

WAYNE, N.J. - William Paterson scored 28 points off turnovers and had an 89-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in a 35-14 victory over the McDaniel College football team Saturday at Wightman Stadium.

The Green Terror (0-3) limited the Pioneers to just 143 yards of total offense while forcing eight punts and totaling five sacks. William Paterson was also 2-of-12 on third-down conversions and possessed the ball for only 20 minutes.

Meanwhile, the McDaniel offense had 333 yards of total offense led by 118 yards rushing from graduate student Trent Gaskins. It was his second career 100-yard rushing performance and first since he ran for a career-high 124 yards on Oct. 30, 2021.

Both teams fumbled on their opening possessions with the Pioneers (1-2) returning a strip sack 65 yards for the game's first touchdown just 1:44 into the first quarter.

Neither team could get anything going offensively over the next 10 possessions before junior Eric Grinwis connected with freshman Logan Marsh from 11 yards out to tie game at 7-7 with 2:39 remaining in the second quarter.

However, William Paterson would return the ensuing kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown before an interception halted a Green Terror drive inside the red zone with 48 seconds left before halftime.

Despite out-gaining the Pioneers 152-27 in the first half, McDaniel trailed 14-7 after turning the ball over four times and allowing two return touchdowns.

The Green Terror had four more turnovers in the second half which negated their 181 yards of total offense, three red-zone changes and over 23 minutes  of possession time.

Grinwis threw for 213 yards and touchdowns, including an 11-yard strike to senior Hunter Sigler who finished with four catches for 83 yards and one score.

Graduate student Mike Dunn led a strong defensive effort with six tackles, 1.5 sacks and one forced fumble. He was one of six players with at least one tackle for loss and one of four with at least one sack.

McDaniel heads into its bye week before returning to action on Saturday, Sept. 30 against Gettysburg on Homecoming.
