CHESTERTOWN, Md. - The Green Terror traveled to Washington College for the season finale. In a tightly contested matchup, McDaniel used an eight-run ninth inning to pull away from the Shoremen. With three wins over the last four games, McDaniel finishes the 2023 campaign with a 19-17-1 overall record.
Led by senior
Billy Wheatley and freshman
Ben Davis who combined for seven RBI's, the Green Terror kept it close with Washington over the first eight innings but exploded in the ninth inning set off by a three RBI double from
Wheatley at the start of the inning.
The Green Terror opened up the game with back-to-back singles from
Tyler Yohn and
Jake Smith. Davis came up next and laced an RBI single into center field to put McDaniel on the board first. Freshman
Tyson Nercessian got the start for McDaniel and pitched the first three innings. Washington College battled back and scored a run in the second and third inning to take the lead.
With the score tied entering the fifth inning, McDaniel put runners on second and third, then
Wheatley hit a deep fly into the outfield allowing
Joey Hubinger to tag up and score. Designated hitter
Hunter Kelly ripped a double to right center field, scoring
Davis to put the Green Terror up 4-2.
The Shoremen came right back with three runs in the bottom half of the inning to retake the lead, 5-4.
Kelly came through once again for McDaniel with an RBI single in the seventh inning, scoring
Austin Goudeaux.
Remy Mangum and
Ryan Gibbons came out of the bullpen for the Green Terror and held Washington scoreless over the final three innings.
Mangum struck out three batters during his stretch over two innings.
Entering the ninth inning with the score tied at five,
Hubinger singled then
Davis and
Goudeaux walked to load the bases.
Wheatley stepped to the plate next and smashed a double into the right center field gap scoring all three runners.
Wheatley eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from
Yohn later in the inning. The Green Terror weren't finished yet with an RBI single from
Jake Smith who tallied three hits on the day.
Davis drove in a pair of runners with a single to right field to cap off an eight-run inning.
Gibbons came in to close out the Shoremen in the bottom half of the ninth and shut down the Washington offense including a strike out to give McDaniel the 13-5 win.
With the win, McDaniel records their second highest win-total since 2016. They also improved their conference record by two wins over the 2022 campaign.
