WESTMINSTER, Md. - McDaniel College softball juniors
Mandy Butz and
Makayla Calamita combined for five hits and five RBIs as the Green Terror dropped both games of a doubleheader against Ursinus Saturday at the Softball Park.
The Green Terror (7-15, 1-5 CC), who have lost five-straight, were hampered by five errors, including four in game two.
Butz went 3-for-5 with two RBIs while Calamita was 2-for-6 with three RBIs.
Over the two games, Ursinus (18-10, 3-3 CC) scored 18 runs on 27 hits, 11 of which went for extra bases.
Ursinus 8, McDaniel 3
Each team scored a run on two hits in the first with Calamita scoring sophomore
Bella Sylvester with an RBI-double.
The Bears would add a run in the second and two in third, both on RBI doubles to take a 4-1 lead before Butz would pull the Green Terror within one on a two-run single through the right side in the bottom of the third.
However, that would be as close as McDaniel would get as Ursinus added three more runs in the fifth with all three coming on extra-base hits. Kayla Carr had an RBI-double before scoring on a two-run triple by Sarah DiLello.
Six of the Bears' eight runs came on extra-base hits as six different players combined for six doubles and one triple.
Butz went 2-for-2 with two RBIs while senior
Evie Craig was 2-for-4. Calamita reached base twice in three at-bats with a walk and a double. Meanwhile, graduate student
Katy Newton extended her hit streak to 17 games with a single through the right side in the bottom of the sixth.
In her first appearance since the season opener at Salisbury on March 4, sophomore
Hannah Costa totaled 4.1 innings inside the circle, holding Ursinus to three earned runs while striking out three in relief of senior
Parker Murphy.
Ursinus 10, McDaniel 2
Like the opener, the Bears jumped out to an early lead with a three-run third before Calamita hit her second home run of the season and fifth of her career with a two-run shot to left center in the bottom of the inning to pull the Green Terror within one.
However, Ursinus would score the game's final seven runs, five of which were unearned.
The Bears totaled five more extra-base hits, including four doubles and one home run.
Calamita finished 1-for-3 with two RBIs while senior
Kylie Sears had one hit and one walk in three plate appearances.
The Green Terror look to get back on track on Tuesday when they host a Centennial Conference doubleheader with Washington College. First pitch is scheduled for 3 p.m.
