WESTMINSTER, Md. - McDaniel College softball graduate student
Katy Newton had four hits to extend her hit streak to 19 games, but Washington College totaled 26 hits to sweep a Centennial Conference doubleheader Tuesday at the Softball Park.
The Green Terror (7-17, 1-7 CC) were hampered by leaving 19 runners left on base, including 10 in scoring position.
Newton, who went 4-for-7 with one RBI and one run, leads the team with 34 hits and a .425 batting average this season, both career highs. She now has 90 hits in 105 career games between McDaniel and Immaculata.
Sophomore
Jessica Millard added three hits, going 3-for-6 with a run.
Washington College 19, McDaniel 6
The Shorewomen (14-14-1, 6-1-1 CC) led from the beginning, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first. The Green Terror answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the inning, taking advantage of two Washington College errors to cut their deficit in half, 4-2.
However, the visitors would take command over the next two innings, outscoring McDaniel 11-0 with seven runs in the top of the second, including six on three extra-base hits.
The Shorewomen added four more runs in the third, two of which came on bases loaded walks, to take a 15-2 lead after three.
Washington College, who scored at least two runs in all five innings, led 17-2 following a two-run homer by Lexie Witmer in the top of the fourth.
Junior
Makayla Calamita drove in her second run of the game with an RBI-single in the fourth and Newton stole home before the Green Terror capped the scoring on a fielding error and fielder's choice in the fifth.
Calamita and Millard combined for four of McDaniel's 10 hits as Calamita was 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs while Millard was 2-for-3. Newton went 1-for-4 with one RBI and one run.
The Green Terror used four pitchers in allowing a season-high 19 runs and 18 hits. They also walked eight.
Washington College 1, McDaniel 0
After 25 runs and 28 hits in the opener, offense was at a premium in game two as the only run was unearned and the two teams combined to leave 18 runners on base.
With two outs in the top of the second, the Shorewomen's Chloe Trefz drove a 2-2 pitch into right field for a triple before scoring on the next pitch which resulted in a fielding error by the Green Terror for the lone run of the game.
A total of 15 batters reached base over the final five-and-a-half innings, but only eight made it into scoring position, all of whom were stranded as Lexi Barnhart and senior
Parker Murphy engaged in a pitcher's duel.
Barnhart allowed six hits and 10 base runners with four walks in her second complete game of the season, but managed to pick up her first shutout, improving her record to 4-3 in eight starts this season. Meanwhile, Murphy scattered eight hits over 7.0 innings with no walks in her ninth complete game effort.
Newton totaled three of McDaniel's six hits as she went 3-for-3, posting her ninth multi-hit game this season in 23 starts, including fourth with at least three hits. Senior
Kylie Sears was 1-for-2 with a walk.
McDaniel continues Centennial Conference play on Saturday when it travels to Lancaster, Pa. for a doubleheader at Franklin & Marshall. First pitch is at 1 p.m.
