Softball Splits Doubleheader at Franklin & Marshall

LANCASTER, Pa. - McDaniel College junior Paytyn Hazelton totaled three hits and four RBIs while senior Mel Grant picked up a win in the circle as the Green Terror split a doubleheader at Franklin & Marshall Sunday.

The Green Terror (8-18, 2-8 CC) picked up a win in game two to snap their eight game losing streak. They also improved to 4-1 in their last five road games in the series.

Hazelton finished the day 3-for-7 with a double and her third home run of the season while driving in four runs.

Graduate student Katy Newton went 5-for-8 to extend her hitting streak to 21 games. Newtown leads the team with 39 hits this season and now has 95 for her career, including 56 in four seasons at Immaculata.

The Diplomats (5-16, 1-6 CC) scored the first six runs of the game while Ainsley McClure held the Green Terror scoreless through the first five innings while limiting them to just two hits.

After taking a 1-0 lead on an RBI-ground out in the bottom of the second, Franklin & Marshall added five more runs in the third, including four on three doubles. A two-run double by Francesca Testa proved to be the difference, scoring Jaden Spigner and Devon Witt to give the Dips a 4-0 lead.

McDaniel finally broke through in the top of the sixth with two runs on four hits. The first three batters all reached base on singles to load the bases before Hazelton hit a two-out, two-run double down the right field line to score Newton and sophomore Bella Sylvester.

Despite a lead-off double by senior Kylie Sears in the seventh, the Green Terror couldn't generate any more runs as McClure closed the door, striking out the final three batters to pick up her third win of the season.

McClure had 12 strikeouts as she totaled her fifth complete game in eight starts this season, allowing just seven hits with one walk.

Newton was 2-for-3 as she was the only player with more than one hit for McDaniel. Meanwhile, sophomore Hannah Costa pitched four perfect innings with one strikeout in relief of senior Parker Murphy.

McDaniel 9, Franklin & Marshall 7

The Green Terror got things started early in game two, scoring five runs in the top of the first, all on extra-base hits, including a two-run double by junior Makayla Calamita, an RBI-double by junior Mandy Butz and a two-run homer by Hazelton.

The Diplomats got two back in the bottom of the inning on a two-run homer by Kat Gunther before both team's pitchers found their groove.

Senior Mel Grant held F&M hitless over the next four innings while Kayla Kilmer, who entered with one out in the top of the first, limited McDaniel to just two hits until the top of the fifth when Butz drove in two more runs with a single up the middle to push the Green Terror lead to 7-2.

Senior Evie Craig followed suit with a two-run single up the middle of her own in the top of the sixth for what proved to be the game-winning runs for McDaniel.

Trailing 9-2, the Diplomats scored a run in the sixth on a sacrifice fly before nearly forcing extra innings with four runs in the bottom of the seventh. After back-to-back walks and single to center to leadoff the inning, Franklin & Marshall scored all four runs with two outs, including three on a bases clearing double by Hannah Matusiak.

However, with the tying run at the plate, Costa managed to get Alexa Klepper to ground out to third to give the Green Terror their first win since April 1, snapping their seven-game losing streak.

Grant picked up her first win since March 13, earning her first win in her last six starts. She surrendered just three hits over 5.0 innings while allowing three runs and walking three. Costa allowed four runs and four walks, but just two hits over 2.0 innings.

Butz went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs while Newton and Sylvester each had three hits. Craig and Hazelton were both 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

McDaniel plays five games this week, including three at home beginning with a non-conference doubleheader against Catholic on Tuesday. First pitch is at 3:00 p.m. at the Softball Park.
