Softball Secures Ninth-Inning Walk-Off Win Against Catholic

WESTMINSTER, Md. - McDaniel College softball sophomore Olivia Dresser hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the ninth to give the Green Terror a split with Catholic in a non-conference doubleheader Tuesday at the Softball Park.

The Green Terror (9-19) posted their first extra-inning win this season and first since May 1, 2021 when they defeated Ursinus on the road in nine innings, 17-8.

McDaniel, who had lost three-straight extra-inning contests, was hampered by 10 errors over 16 defensive innings, but managed to total 15 hits in game two, its second-most hits in a game this season. The team also improved to 6-0 this season when it scores at least 10 runs.

Senior Evie Craig totaled five hits on the day, going 5-for-7 with three doubles, a walk and two RBIs. Junior Mandy Butz had four hits as she was 4-for-8 with one RBI.

In the first meeting between the two teams since 2007, the Green Terror suffered their third shutout loss of the season and second at home as they were held to just six hits while committing four errors.

The Cardinals' Katie Hurd took a no-hitter into the fourth before Butz hit a slow rolling, two-out single between first and second. Hurd allowed just one walk and struck out three in posting her third complete game in 14 starts this season.

Catholic (17-15) jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first, scoring two unearned runs after two McDaniel errors. The visitors added a run in the fifth on a two-out, RBI-single in the fifth before scoring two in the top of the seventh.

Despite allowing just one earned run and holding the Cardinals to just four hits over 3.0 innings, senior Mel Grant suffered her third loss in the last four starts. She was one of three pitchers who saw action for the Green Terror along with senior Parker Murphy and sophomore Hannah Costa.

Butz went 2-for-3 at the plate while graduate student Katy Newton was 2-for-4, extending her hitting streak to 22 games and picking up the career hits No. 96 and No. 97.

McDaniel 10, Catholic 9 (9 innings)

In a game that took two hours and 34 minutes, the Green Terror rallied from an early 5-0 deficit to post their first win at home since April 1, snapping a six-game losing streak.

The game featured 19 runs, 27 hits, nine errors, eight extra-base hits, four ties, three lead changes and 26 runners left on base.

Just like the opener, the Cardinals scored three runs in the first, including two unearned, before adding two more runs in the second, both of which were unearned.

However, in contrast to game one, the McDaniel offense came alive in the second, scoring four runs in the fourth and two in the fifth. The Green Terror scored four runs on three RBI-doubles in the fourth from Craig, senior Kylie Sears and sophomore Bella Sylvester.

Sears tied the game at 5-5 in the fifth on a triple by junior Taylor Routzahn before an RBI-single by Dresser gave McDaniel its first lead of the day, 6-5.

Catholic retook the lead with two runs in the top of the sixth before Butz tied it again in the bottom of the inning with an RBI-single up the middle.

Deadlocked at seven after seven, the two teams would head to extra innings. Using the international tiebreaker to start the inning with a runner on second, both teams would score two runs in the eighth. With two outs, Butz hit a slow roller to short and beat the throw before advancing to second on a throwing error that allowed freshman Ryan Smith to score from second and tie the game at 9-9.

Playing with minimal daylight, no outs and runners on first and second, Costa retired the next three-straight batters to set the stage for the heroics in the bottom of the inning.

Sears led off the inning with a single through the right side, but the winning run was thrown out at home to keep the game tied. However, Routzahn doubled to right center to advance Sears to third before Dresser brought her home with a single through the right side to give the Green Terror their first walk-off win since March 30, 2022 in a 1-0 win over Messiah at home.

Craig went 4-for-5 with two doubles and two RBIs while Sears was 3-for-4 with a double, walk, RBI and three runs. Dresser was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

Although she got on base and scored a run, Netwon saw her 22-game hit streak come to an end as she was hitless in five plate appearances.

In the circle, Costa picked up her first win of the season and seventh of her career as she allowed just five hits and one earned run over 3.2 innings while striking out two.

McDaniel returns to action on Thursday when it hosts a rare, single game versus Messiah at the Softball Park beginning at 4:30 p.m.
