Two Big Innings Doom Softball in Sweep at Gettysburg

GETTYSBURG, Pa. - Gettysburg used two big innings, one in game one and one in game two, to sweep a Centennial Conference doubleheader with the McDaniel College softball team Tuesday at Bobby Jones Field.

After sweeping both games at home a year ago, the Green Terror (7-13, 1-3 CC) have now lost five-straight at Gettysburg dating back to the 2018 season.

Graduate student Katy Newton and senior Colleen Camburn had a hit in both games with Newton going 2-for-4 with a walk and a run, extending her hit streak to 16 games. Camburn was 2-for-3 with a walk, RBI and two runs scored.

Game one was back-and-forth with the Green Terror taking a 1-0 lead in the top of the third on an RBI-single by senior Evie Craig, who was named Centennial Conference Athlete of the Week on Tuesday, before the Bullets took the lead in the bottom of the inning with two unearned runs on two McDaniel errors.

The Green Terror tied the game for the second time on an RBI-single by Camburn in the top of the fourth, but Gettysburg (12-9-1, 2-2 CC) erupted for seven runs on seven hits in the bottom of the fourth, including four on a two-run double by Allegra DeCandia and a two-run triple from Olivia Moser.

The Bullets (12-9-1, 2-2 CC) scored all seven runs with two outs.

Leading by seven, Gettysburg sealed the win with another extra-base hit and unearned run in the fifth as Giovanna Komst drove in the winning run with a double to right center.

The Bullets took advantage of six extra-base hits, three unearned runs and six walks for their fourth run-rule victory of the season.

Newton, Craig, Camburn and sophomore Jessica Millard combined for all four of McDaniel's hits as Paige Forry picked up her seventh win in 11 decisions for Gettysburg, allowing just two runs while striking out seven.

The second game saw the Green Terror get off to a fast start, scoring two runs in the top of the first on a two-out, two-run double by junior Paytyn Hazelton.

The Bullets took the lead with three runs in the bottom of the second, two of which were unearned before McDaniel went back in front with four runs in the top of the fourth. Camburn tied the game on a passed ball before Hazelton laced another two-run double to center and scored on a throwing error to put the visitors ahead, 6-3.

However, Gettysburg tied the game for the third time with three more runs in the third on an RBI-single by Jess Campana and two-run double by Moser.

Tied at 6-6, the Bullets took command of the game with six runs on seven hits in the bottom of the fourth, including the go-ahead run on a leadoff home run by Lauren O'Leary. Campana drove in two more with a two-run single as eight of Gettysburg's nine batters had at least one RBI with five driving in two or more.

The Green Terror trimmed the deficit to five when Camburn scored on a wild pitch in the sixth, but the Bullets earned their second-straight walk-off win with three runs in the sixth, two of which were unearned.

McDaniel allowed five more unearned runs in game two, raising its total for the day to eight as it committed six errors.

Hazelton was 2-for-3 with two doubles and four RBIs while sophomore Bella Sylvester went 2-for-4 with two runs.

Forry picked up her second win of the day, entering in relief of Megan Hughes and limiting the Green Terror to just one unearned run on two hits over 3.2 innings while striking out six.

McDaniel begins a four-game home stand on Saturday when it hosts Ursinus at the Softball Park beginning on 1 p.m. for #CCGreenOut, a Centennial Conference initiative to raise mental health awareness. The Green Terror will wear the green uniforms and all fans in attendance are encouraged to wear green as well.

Students from the McDaniel chapter of The Hidden Opponent will be on hand to distribute information and THO McDaniel president, women's soccer junior Taylor Mazan, will be throwing out the first pitch.
