BALTIMORE, Md. - Dillon Souvignier hit a walk-off single to left as No. 4 Johns Hopkins scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth to rally for a 10-9 victory over the McDaniel College baseball team Tuesday Babb Field at Stromberg Stadium.
The Green Terror (16-14) faced their second nationally-ranked opponent on the road this season after falling at No. 2 Salisbury, 10-4 on March 28.
The game featured four ties and three lead changes. Freshman
Ben Davis, who went 3-for-5, gave the visitors an early 3-0 lead with a three-run homer to right in the top of the first, his fifth home run of the season.
After Hopkins was able to get one run back in the bottom of the inning, senior
Connor Uhrig continued his hot streak with his sixth home run of the season to lead-off the second.
The Blue Jays (29-3) started to climb back with two runs in the bottom of the second before they tied the game for the first time with a run in the third.
Each team scored a run in the fourth and with the game tied at 5-5, Shawn Steuerer gave Hopkins its first lead with a sacrifice fly in the sixth.
That was the only run allowed by
Gannon Williams over two solid innings before McDaniel put two runners on in the seventh. Senior
Billy Wheatley laced a double to right to score
Austin Goudeaux and tie the game at 6-6 before
Luke Kelly pinch hit for
Todd Calhoun and hit a two-run double to center, driving in Wheatley and
Hunter Kelly to give the team an 8-6 advantage.
Junior
Tyler Yohn drove in the final run with a single to center that scored junior
Santino DeFilippo, matching the team's largest lead, 9-6.
Hopkins got one run back in the eighth while holding the Green Terror scoreless over their final two offensive innings.
In the bottom of the ninth, James Stevens led off with a double to right before pinch hitter Tripp Myers followed with a double to score Stevens. Isaiah Winikur singled to left and Alex Shane walked to load the bases with no outs. Matthew Cooper then tied the game with a sacrifice fly to left before Souvignier singled to left to score Winikur.
Yohn was 3-for-5 with one RBI while L. Kelly drove in two runs in his only plate appearance.
Sophomore
Connor Henderson, one of seven players with a save for McDaniel this season, suffered his first loss in his team-leading 12th appearance of the year.
McDaniel looks to even the series on Friday when they host the Blue Jays at Preston Field beginning at 3:30 p.m.
