Sears, Butz Lead Softball to Split in Centennial Opener

WESTMINSTER, Md. - Back-to-back home runs by McDaniel College softball senior Kylie Sears and junior Mandy Butz highlighted the team's split with Haverford Saturday at the Softball Park in the Centennial Conference opener for both teams.

The Green Terror (7-11, 1-1 CC) split its third consecutive doubleheader and second in-a-row at home.

Senior Evie Craig went 3-for-4 on the day with three walks, two RBIs and two runs while graduate student Katy Newton extended her hitting streak to 14 games with three hits, including two in the opener and one in game two. She also scored three runs.

McDaniel 12, Haverford 4

After each team scored on an RBI-single to tie the game at 1-1, the Fords (13-11, 1-1 CC) scored three unearned runs in the top of the third to take a three-run lead.

However, the Green Terror responded with nine runs in the bottom of the third. Junior Paytyn Hazelton started the scoring with a sacrifice fly before Sears tied the game with a two-run homer to right center and Butz immediately followed with a solo home run to right field for what proved to be the game-winning run.

It marked the first home runs of the season for both Sears and Butz.

Junior Makayla Calamita drew a bases loaded walk and Craig laced a two-run double to right center before Hazelton capped the scoring with her second and third RBIs of the inning with a double to the same spot.

Leading 10-4, McDaniel sealed their fourth run-rule victory this season with a run in the fifth on an RBI-single from Sears and one in the sixth on a single up the middle by Sylvester.

The Green Terror totaled a season-high 16 hits in the opener as eight different players had at least one and six had at least two. Six players picked up at least one RBI as well.

Hazelton went 3-for-3 with four RBIs while Sears was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Butz also had three hits and Craig was 2-for-3 with two RBIs and two runs. Calamita walked twice and scored three runs.

In the circle, senior Parker Murphy picked up her fifth win, scattering seven hits over 6.0 innings while allowing just one earned run and striking out three.

Haverford 6, McDaniel 5

The Fords earned a split with a one run, weather-shortened victory in game two. Trailing 5-2, they scored four runs in the top of the fifth before lightning delayed the game for 48 minutes and eventually led to it being called with two outs in the top of the seventh.

Haverford jumped out to a 2-0 lead with an RBI-single in the first and a solo home run in the second before the Green Terror tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the second on a two-run double by Sylvester.

Sylvester gave McDaniel its first lead with a bases clearing, three-run double in the bottom of the third as she finished 3-for-4 with five RBIs.

The three-run advantage lasted until the top of the fifth when the Fords regained the lead with four runs on two hits and one error. Mia Kessinger tied the game with a two-run single to left before Nikki Kingsland, who homered in the second, drove in the game-winning run with a two-out double to left center to score Jocelyn Leal.

McDaniel drew seven walks and had six players combine for eight hits, but the team stranded 11 runners on base, including eight in scoring position. Craig had one hit and three walks in four plate appearances.

Murphy took the loss, allowing six runs and six hits over 6.0 innings while walking four.

The Green Terror return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Gettysburg for a Centennial Conference doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m.
