SALISBURY, Md. - The Green Terror softball team opened up their season against #3 ranked Salisbury and followed that up with a matchup against Clarkson. McDaniel put up a valiant effort against the potent Salisbury team, but the Seagulls used a big fourth inning to pull away from the Green Terror. In their second game against Clarkson, McDaniel went down early, and tried to rally late but fell short.
Salisbury 11, McDaniel 3
Senior
Parker Murphy got the start for McDaniel in their season opener against #3 Salisbury. The Seagulls scored three runs in the first inning, but Murphy settled into the game and held them scoreless over the next two innings. The McDaniel offense went up against Nicole Ortega who was 3-0 coming into the game, and proved tough to hit. Graduate student
Katy Newton recorded two hits off Ortega, but the rest of the offense struggled to find their rhythm.Â
In the bottom of the fourth, Salisbury scored eight runs including a grand slam from Natalie Paoli to extend their lead to 11. In the top of the fifth inning, McDaniel started to comeback after junior
Mandy Butz drew a walk, and scored off an RBI single from
Jessica Millard. With the bases loaded
Bella Sylvester ripped a single into center field scoring freshman
Taylor Coyle. McDaniel scored one more run, but their rally was cut short and they fell to the Seagulls 11-3.
Clarkson 5, McDaniel 2
Katy Newton opened the second game with a single up the middle, the stole second base. With two outs,
Evie Craig made contact and reached first on a fielding error scoring Newton to take the 1-0 lead.
Mel Grant got the start for the Green Terror in the second game, and recorded three strikeouts over six innings.
Clarkson got on the board in the bottom half of the first inning scoring a pair of runs.Â
The Golden Knights extended their lead in the bottom of the third to lead 5-1. In the top of the fifth inning
Mandy Butz connected on a ball to right field for an RBI single scoring
Taylor Coyle who was pinch running for
Evie Craig who opened the inning with a double to center field.Â
McDaniel trailed 5-2 heading into the bottom of the seventh inning.
Bella Sylvester opened up the inning with a bunt-single down the third baseline. Clarkson was able to make the right fielding plays down the stretch and hold the Green Terror scoreless in the final inning despite runners on base.
McDaniel returns to action on Sunday against Clarkson at 10:30 AM & Salisbury at 2:30 PM.
